To begin with the there is the great work done on the filter and the
A/D converters. Two of the synths you happened to mention are known
for their terribly weak sound that had to be bolstered by adding
onboard effects, the M1 and D50. The TX7, of course, is FM which tends
to be very brittle and harsh (which can be advantageous) and was never
designed for making warm analog sounds.
The reality behind professional sample banks being so impressive is in
the mix. Unlike most instruments where you enhance the sound
after/during recording with compression, eq, and effects with a
sampler you can do that all in advance and sample only the final
result. The best example of this is drum loops. Even in a
non-recording enviroment drum loops always sound better because they
already have been processed in a way to give them great dynamics.
Where as just sequencing raw drum samples, especially if you don't
have expensive mics, compressors, limiters, etc. to create the samples
with leaves you with samples that tend to have no punch or presence.
On one of my many trips to E-mu back in the 90's I got to go into a
sound lab where someone created some of the factory presets. He had at
his disposal a great project studio with great monitors, mixer, and
outboard gear all of which went into making great samples. Add that
with a knowledge of the sampler itself that few user's have and you
are going to end up with banks of samples that show off the Emax at
it's best. It's an art not many can master. You need to have a good
studio engineering skills combined with patience and in depth sampler
knowledge.
