that's easy to check, what happens when you wiggle the cable a bit in the
jack? Do you get more of the same crackling, or a different kind of
crackling?

It could also be the output amplifier circuit, its getting old now... 
The performance of the circuit can change with component ageing, and it
could just be overdriving.

Or, it could also be the data going from the processor to the DAC.
