RE: [emax] Making floppies from .em2 files

2001-03-16 by Rob Keeble

Hi,
A large number of Emax sample banks are in EM1 format at www.emulatorarchive.com. Many of the sample banks have RealSystem previews so you can listen to the samples first. The Emax II can read Emax diskettes, it converts them to 16bit format. So you can download EM1 files, convert them into Emax floppies, and read them into the Emax II
The advice on using EMX is entirely correct. It is essential it is run under DOS, and that new DS/DD diskettes are used. HD diskettes will not work, they have a different number of tracks and the media has slightly different magnetic properties.
The procedure we have found 90% success with is (for nearly 200 EM1 files):
Format the a brand new diskette in an Emax /Emax II.
Boot the PC with DOS 6.22.
Launch EMX
Format the diskette with EMX
Write the diskette with EMX.
Read the diskette into the Emax/Emax II.
Our Emax II is more tolerant of EM1 files than our 3 Emax's, for some reason ! You may find an older PC works better than a new one, and that booting from a DOS diskette works better than using DOS within Win 95/98/NT. Of course Win2000/ME do not have DOS.
Technical Support for the Emax and Emax II is available from our web site, and we can advise on repairs and locating new sample banks. We stock replacement floppy drives, can advise on the E-mu spares situation, and even provide replacement keys for the Emax /Emax II keyboards. We also stock Emax II sample CDROM's.
Many Thanks to Mike Prudence, the author of EMX.
Regards
Rob

It was my understanding that the people who were using it did
not make backups, and the floppies gradually went bad one by
one from being used a lot.

No, it can read new floppies just fine. It was just that my
friend probably used em1 files and the loops all click.

I now have a copy of the PDF Emax II manual, so I can read it
over and find out how to remove the clicks, as you suggested
(thanks).

Yes, I have it now.

Really? It's hard for me to believe that HD disks won't work; they
are virtually identical to DS/DD diskettes, except for the extra square
hole, which can just be taped over. At least, that's always worked for
me on various computers, IIRC. (It was so long ago...)
