Re: [emax] Atari ST

You could use a midi sequencing program with the built
in midi ports.

A midi thru "y" cable might come in handy. They can be
found on the net for around a few dollars.

Requirements of the programs vary in the amount of
memory, and if the monitor should be color or
monochrome.

Master Tracks and Cubase are the programs of choice.
There is also some software by Dr. T's.

As these programs are no longer in production for the
ST, you will need to find a used copy, or get one from
an Atari dealer or collector.

I have Cubase which requires a security "dongle".
There are "cracked" copies, but those were chiefly in
Europe where the ST was more popular.

I heard nothing but good about Master Tracks, but I
would have to ask my Atari buddies if they knew where
a copy might exist.

I also have the Dr. T's software. It was designed with
mathematics in mind...you can do some really cool midi
tricks, but it's quite complicated.

I also have a Hybrid Art's sequencing program that
seems simpler and may work out for you. Hybrid Art's
is long out of business, but I might be able to dig up
a spare copy.

An alternative to the ST would be one of those old
Alesis 8 track hardware sequencers (MMT 8?). They can
be gotten used for about 100 bucks, and are simple to
use. You can do some great stuff with those.

Some folks like using computer's for sequencing
because of the power and the graphical interface.
Others find the interface cumbersome and go back to
their hardware sequencers.

It really depends an how badly you want to use the ST.
I can probably did up something that will work, but I
will need the spec's (memory and monitor) of your ST.
I'm not sure I would recommend spending the time and
money to upgrade it, unless you are "on a mission" or
an Atari collector like myself.

Many people have used the ST's in the past. The guy
who does the music for Madonna uses one, and portable
models such as the Atari Portfolio are still in use
with stage productions (a friend of mine once got a
repair call to fix a portfolio used to run the music
for the show "Phantom of the Opera").

Email me if you are still interested.
I just moved so it might take a week or so to dig
through boxes and make phone calls to find stuff.
