SE or not SE, that is the question.

2001-10-24 by mr julian.

I have an Emax rack. I have a bunch of disks with the
SE operation system on them, but I don't think that
means its an Emax SE (I always thought there was 2
parts to the SE upgrade, an eeprom update, and then
the new OS.

Basically I have the options in the operating system
for the spectrum synthesis and transform
multiplication stuff, and the spectrum synthesis
works, but whenever I go to do a transform multiply
(even just on 2 *tiny* sounds with nothing else in
memory) the Emax responds with "not enough memory"
This leads me to think that my Emax does not have the
eeprom upgrade.

Looking around on emulatorarchive.com they have the
old SE upgrade manual, which lists the contents of the
upgrade pack.... containing just the ONE disk. it
appears that this contained a special OS (maybe with
the eeprom info in the sample area of the disk) that
would upgrade the eeprom, and then turn itself into an
everyday SE operating system disk....

So....

How do I upgrade my Emax to the SE EEPROM?? I doubt I
can get the original disk from EMU anymore... Did
anyone manage to copy the upgrade disk using emx or a
disk imaging program before using it and having it
modify iteslf?? Otherwise, the kludge would be to get
an image of an SE EEPROM and copy it to my EEPROM...
That is do-able, but i need someone with both an emax
SE, and a way of reading the EEPROM.....

anyone have any comments on my reasoning about the SE
upgrade, or even better, a way for me to perform it on
my Emax??????

thanks,

julian
