The caps seldom actually 'pop', they usually just dry out and for an instrument of this vintage you should really expect to have to replace them. Sorry, but you've got to pull it all apart and warm up the soldering iron, while you're at it you might as well check the bigger resistors, I seem to remember last time I had mine apart that they used some cheap carbon-comp ones that had change their values with age.
