Re: [emax] Re: Memory upgrade

2001-12-04 by Skip Spoula

Hi, The last phone number I had for Sound Logic was 800 753-6558. I upgraded my Emax II to 7 MB from 3MB. The biggest problem is to have the memory expansion board and the PALs. If the EMAX II is >3mb the expansion board is installed. Some newer Emax IIs have the correct chips in to just install the chips and upgrade disk to update the EEPROM. Memory chips are easy to obtain from JDR Microdevices or Jameco electronics. Mik at Sound logic was able to send me 2 of his kits. I ended up buying the PALs from EMU @ $25.00 ea. If you are upgrading a 1 MB unit it probably don't have a memory expansion board in it. The install disk writes to an EEPROM and is copy protected. You only get 1 2MB upgrade per disk. My upgrade was very tricky as my Expansion board was minus about 3 logic ICs which address the memory chips. I had to find the chips and add sockets remove jumpers to accept the extra 4 MB of memory I needed to install. Needless to say it was not a job for a novice technician. Take a good look at the two logic boards as they may be interchangeable by removing cable connectors and such. I think what Rob is telling you will be a whole lot easier than unsoldering the EEPROM and taking a chance at destroying the board. Then you may have 2 dead units! Mik at Sound Logic also has a info and fax number of 760-787-9632
Best of luck to you,
Skip

  Rob,

I've already thought about swapping the mainboards. The problems is
that one is a keyboard and the other is a rack, so the boards are
  slightly different (scsi port, etc).

I don't have a upgrade disk, but coming from the pc world, i thought
that what the disk does is a like bios update, so i could swap the
bios chip from one emax to the other.

PS1: Sorry for my poor english.

PS2: The link to soundlogic seems to be dead.
