Old CSERVE thread, Emax 1992

2008-11-11 by jose jimenez

Hi,

I've been imaging old floppies I have in the garage and found this text capture from an old compuserve session in 1992. It's short, but interesting.

Thanks for the info on the 650 MO drives - I think I'll get one of the Pinnacle
PMO 650's as soon as the price drops a little - now for another question!
Is it Emu's intention to allow users to obtain EIIIxp RAM chips from sources
other than Emu? In the press release for the xp, it says something like "uses
standard IBM ZIP chips" - but the specs on these chips - 1megx4 512K DRAM chips
- are almost impossible to find through computer stores, etc.. If Emu wanted to
use a non-proprietary RAM chip, why not Mac SIMMs or IBM SIMM modules ..
something that is generally available. Certainly there are quality sources of
these since everybody uses them in PC's and macs - What's up?
Also - I've discovered that some CD-ROM mfgs for EIII sounds are reselling Emu
lib sounds - is this standard practice? Is there any advantage/difference in
buying these from Frank R. vs. some third party?
Thanks for the info - can't wait to hear my IIIxp as soon as the CD's arrive on
Tuesday!
Mark

Hi Mark,
Sorry to hear you're having a hard time finding ZIPs. E-Mu certainly has plenty
to sell, but I assure you it's not a Marketing strategy to make more $ through
memory kit sales. There are a few reasons they went for the ZIPs over SIMMS.
1) Price (this might be debatable, but at the time of final PC board design,
there was about a $5 -> $10 spread)
2) Throw away syndrome (avoiding the tendency with 8 SIMM sockets to initially
populate the board with 8 1MB SIMMSs and then upon expansion, forcing people to
throw away them away as they move to 4MB SIMMS)
3) SIMM Modules would have required a few extra support chips.
As far as CD-ROM sales go, we sell theirs (or at least soon we will be), they
sell ours. Prices should be about the same.
Keep in touch...
Ed dickie @E-MU systems Inc. (Product support - Service Dept.)
P.S. Call me at (408) 438-1921 (Service) and I'll give you some ZIP distributor

Thanks again for the info, Ed. I'll call you re:ZIP chips. BTW, I purchased (at
the suggestion of InVision, Frank Revel, etc..) the CD Technologies Porta-Drive
(based on Toshiba 3301) and hooked it up tonight - it works great! Finally got
to hear InVision CD's - incredible! I was ready to buy the Dynatek drive Frank
sells but apparently these are hard to get - he didn't have any in stock and
wasn't sure when they would arrive. Anyway, the sampler sounds great and I
can't wait until the Mac front end software (any idea when ship date will be?)
and the analog sampling option (I assume that's what the two extra plugged
holes are by the 1/4" jacks) come out!

Mark

I will try and reach you by phone this week - tried last week but called the
day you were out... I got a list of compatible chips from Van in your dept. for
the xp but vendors report that those numbers don't correspond to 512k chips --
some (the Toshiba number, for instance) according to a couple of local vendors
refer to Fujitsu parts (approved by Emu?) and others (the NEC numbers) refer to
256K chips. In fact, the number on the illustration of the EIIIxp upgrade kit
doesn't agree with any of the numbers on the "approved" list. Help!
I'll try you by phone tomorrow. I hope you can help my confusion - perhaps my
fault?? In any case, the xp is doing its best with 8meg and is *very* hungry
for more memory! Thanks for your help.

I have left several messages on this board and never received a reply. Perhaps
you can help me. I purchased a PianoDisc midi interface for a grandpiano I
have, and have upgraded it several times. (in many ways it is very similar to
the Yamaha Disklavier, but added onto pianos by retrofit). The last upgrade
uses an E-MU Proteus board internally for orchestral sounds to be used with
prerecorded midi files on 3 1/2 inch floppies. Although I'm sure 99.9% of the
people using the system have no desire or interest in using the Proteus for
other things, I enjoy Midi as a hobby and have a Clavinova CVP-75
(keyboard/synthesizer), TG-55 and MT-32 sound modules and use a Macintosh
computer running either Performer or Pro.5 to interact with my other equipment.
Unfortunately the people at PianoDisc were unable to help me with acquiring
a User's manual for the Proteus board. I ASSUME it is similar to the old
MacProteus boards that have been available in the past. Do I need any special
Mac software to address the various functions and user defined voices, dumping
new patches into it, etc??
If you could find out from someone at E-MU SYSTEMS how I can obtain a manual
or what software can be used I would be very greatful. [ and an outstanding
piece of equipment wouldn't be going mostly to waste]
Thanks, Peter R. Foster, MD

Peter,
Assuming that the Proteus board is compatible with the E-mu Proteus rack module
(which I suspect it is), you should be able to order a Proteus-1 manual from
E-mu. Just in case you need E-mu's contact information, here it is:

Peter,
I did send you a reply, did you get it?
In the reply I mentioned that most likely your PianoDisc system is Proteus Midi
Sysex compatable, but we have no way of knowing for sure. My post-message (to
you) inquiries to our OEM Dept.(Dept. responsible for licensing our technology
to other Manufacturers) have yeilded no additional info. PianoDisc may or may
not filter the Midi data coming into it. Their MIDI In is not necessarily
directly connected to the Proteus board. So, if PianoDisc continues to not
support your info request, you could order a Proteus manual (408-438-1921 ask
for Parts - $20.00) and take a stab at sending some MIDI data strings and see
what happens.
WARNING: It may be that PianoDisc doesn't want you to send Proteus type Sys-ex
messages! SO, E-MU will take no respnsibility for any type of malfunction that
might occur if you do this. E-MU has no legal obligation to support users of
our OEM customers.
All of that aside, I hope I've helped!

We do keep the most current working drivers in Lib15 of the MIDI Forum, as Tom
said. There is also the MultiMedia Forum, which has no CL presence, but does
have Steve Wagh of Brown-Wagh in the Multimedia Vendors Forum (GO MULTIVEN).
The only other place you might try is the Pacific Forum (GO PACIFIC). They have
a Sound Blaster Section and have discussed the Video Blaster. I'm not sure they
constitute an official CL presence, though.

Roland does not offer direct support through the MIDI Vendor forums at this
time. However, there are several very Roland-knowledgeable people--including a
former Roland factory rep--in the Synths/Samplers/FX section (Section 2) of the
MIDI/Music forum (GO MIDIFOR) who might be able to help you out. Is there a
particular question you have?
As for MIDI drivers, I suggest you visit the Sound Cards section (Section 15)

on the Roland products. He's very knowledgable on them.
If you've got problems with the Windows 3.1 drivers, I'd be happy to try and
help. I don't think Lee knows much about them. Most of these kind of
questions are dealt with in the MIDIFOrum, in sections 3, 7 or 15.

Pardon me for butting in, but I have recently aquired a MT-32 and noticed that
MIX Bookshelf has two books to supplement the users manual (Using the Roland
MT-32 by Bob O'Donnell and The Roland MT-32 by Terry Griffey). Would you
recommend either or both for a beginning MT-32 user? I am using this with a
MAC IIci, Vision and a Studio 3. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce,
I have a semi-annual catalog published by Mix Bookshelf that lists quite a few
books on various vendors. I checked and saw one video titled "Sound Canvas
Video Manual" $29.95. It states that it "applies to both SC-55 and SC-155". I
don't know if this would help you or not. Mix's phone number is (800) -

else. Hope this helps.

I was wondering if there are any computer cards that allow you to do
multi-track "sampling" (A/D recording), and that would be able to interface
with my MIDI keyboards.
I don't need studio quality, just something that will allow me to capture my
song ideas (for my home music studio).
Any suggestions?
I've already looked at the Soundblaster card - but I think it's only stereo
recording, not multi-track.

Hi John-
Another place to ask this might be Section 3 (New to MIDI) in our sister
forum, the MIDI/Music Forum. (GO MIDIFORUM)
Interface cards start at around $100 list = $80-ish on the street. One
of the best bargains in sequencers, WinJammer, is $50. I've seen MIDI
compatible keyboards for ~$150, so the bare minimum is about $280. HOWEVER,
these keyboards have no touch sensitivity, and the one I saw that cheap didn't
have full-size keys. You might want consider a more expensive model, with at
least full-sized keys and a velocity sensitive keyboard.

STANDARD MIDI FILE PROGRAMMER'S TOOLKIT
Complete Software Tools Source and Objects Included
   Professional Documentation Supports Popular Languages
For IBM & Compatibles Example Programs Included
Music Quest's Standard MIDI File Programmer's ToolKit is designed for the
programmer intending to add support for Standard MIDI Files to new or
existing music programs for IBM and compatible computers. With support
for Standard MIDI Files, your software can read and write song files
compatible with other music programs.

SOFTWARE TOOLS
Software included with the ToolKit and supplied on diskette includes
functions for reading and writing Standard MIDI Files in Turbo C, Turbo C++,
Turbo Pascal, Quick C, Microsoft C, and QuickBASIC. Complete source and
object files are provided, along with example programs illustrating use of
the ToolKit functions. All Standard MIDI File formats are supported: single
track, multiple track, and multiple song. ToolKit functions are designed
to hide the details of file structure from the user, so that the programmer's
primary task is to transfer song data and timing information between his
software and the file system. Important functions include:
     open_std_mfile create_std_mfile close_std_mfile
     open_track create_track close_track
     write_midi_event write_meta_event write_sysex_event
     read_next_event

REFERENCE MANUAL
The 60-page Reference Manual begins with an overview of the structure and
content of Standard MIDI Files. The bulk of the manual documents the
software tools comprising the ToolKit, with a separate chapter describing
supplied functions for each of the languages supported. Each chapter
describes basic procedures for reading and writing Standard MIDI Files
in the respective language, and includes documentation for all functions.

NO ROYALTIES
You may incorporate ToolKit functions in your program without royalty
obligation so long as you provide visible copyright acknowledgement.
