Re: [emax] EMAX HD Retro

2009-07-10 by meech

i just tried the HDD scan but it didn't work.
I just noticed that there is also a sticker on the master section changing it to

1.master tune
2.memory remaining
3.velocity curve
4.erase all
5.format disk
6.copy bank
7.bird run
8.back up
9.restore
10.special

When i selected master, 8 it offered to back up and told me
About saving to floppy I checked them and they are set to write enable.

Oh and i noticed that it won't let me enter 10 in master.

thank you
d

      Hi Dmitri,

There is an HD OS version. You should be able to check the OS version from the Emax and run some diagnostics. First run this HDD scan below:

Select Master and press 8 this will allow you to run a HDD scan.

Also, this seems obvious, but check the write protection tab on the floppy disk. Most people remove this tab altogether sometimes to protect disks, but that tab should be down to cover the hole.

Hi Donavan

When i turn it on with no disc in it says:

"Emu Systems Inc

System Diagnostics"

for 10 seconds. Then it says

"Emu Systems Inc

Loading Software"

forever. i mean longer than 10 minutes and it never loads.

The floppy OS version I have is 1.1 (hand written ofcourse). When I boot with that floppy the Emax works.

I haven't been able to save to a floppy yet. (I get an error) May be I'm doin it wrong or the discs are bad because I can't load anything from the two custom sound disc/floppys that came with it either.

The manual I have just says "Emax digital sampling keyboard Owners manual by Craig Anderson version 2.0".

I didn't find any mention of the HD inside. So I'm assuming the 2.0 is for the manual but don't know?

The branding says "Emax" printed on the keyboard but has a color matching sticker next to that, that says "HD retro".

The back has a small serial port that says "Computer Interface" I assume thats for an old apple.

I'm willing to upgrade this one as mutch as possible.

Never installed a drive before but owned a rack Ensoniq Mirage and rocked that one.

Doin some basic soldering.

Has any one ever been known to do extra crazy mods on these like adding knobs for certain perimiters like cutoff and resonance? havn't found any online yet.

Thank you

d

Hi Dmitri,

Turn on the Emax without a floppy in the drive and it should attempt to load the OS from the HDD. Have you tried to load/save to the HDD instead of the floppy? What OS version do you have? As much details as you can provide will be very helpful.

I just got an Emax with the sticker that says "HD Retro". the guy who sold it said...

"It's an Emax with the HD retrofit but the drive don't work."

Two Questions:

1.How can I test the drive?

2.Where can i get a new one?
