Hi,
EMX only work under DOS, not windows. Download a copy of DOS from the net or
make one in Win 95/98. You must boot your PC from a DOS diskette for EMX to
work properly.
Download the Emax SE manual from www.emulatorarchive.com if you don';t have
it already and look out for Kawai K5/5000 manuals re-additive synthesis.
Emax SE provides sample convolution (transform multiplication) where two
samples are digitally added together sample by sample, but only for short
samples as the poor old Emax doesn't have much memory or processing power!
There is also additive synthesis whereby you can build sounds out of sine
waves. Both of these DSP techniques were dreamed up by Dana Massie at E-mu
(he did Z-planes too), and echo the features that Digidesign put into their
software around the same time, because Evan Brooks and Dana were mates. e.g.
SoftSynth does additive synthesis on a Mac.
These were really cool techniques in 1986, but you are much better off with
a sample editor or software sampler these days as it takes for ever to use
the Emax . E-mu provided a few diskettes which are useful, as you need lots
of short samples for the TM process to be viable (check the SE Dev
Diskette). We recommend the new NI Kontakt software sampler and Metasynth
2.5 for people who want to really alter samples. You can create some really
nice sounds on a fast computer and then download the samples into your Emax
with Sound Designer II - well thats what we do.
Some pro sound designers did get into these features and there are a few
Emax II samples done with SoftSynth and SE (Northstar Max 3 and E-mu EOS 2).
You can get some really nice sounds if you spend the time....
TM remained a feature in E-mu samplers up until today, but the additive
synthesis was soon dropped as its a bit time consuing for not much benefit.

Hi!
I have 2 questions.
1. I'm going to get a new PC, and win-XP. Does the EMX program work
under XP?
2. Is there some one who can tell me bout the "SE-part" on the Emax
work? I can make sound with it, but I don't really know what the
result is going to be.
cheers/
