but if you get a oled display its just desolder old display and solder the new display to the header pins

That's what I meant. Left is the LED display I was talking about. These are not as thick
as the old ones used to be. Moreover, they can be made to sit closer to the board
as the chips on the back are much smaller, which in effect makes it flush with
the original display.
I have some of the older LED displays here as well and they are indeed almost twice as thick.
That leaves only the connector to fiddle about with but it should be doable, at least
until I find a source for 16x2 OLED displays. Can't use the EMAX all now as the original
display is dead.
