PCD 50b issues in Emax 1

PCD 50b issues in Emax 1

2014-04-01 by essential11939@...

I've just received an Emax I HD retro with SE update (SE HD Rev 1.1)
I have a PCD 50b SCSI card reader and also an HxC floppy emulator.
I can copy the software from the HD to an HxC image and boot from that, but I am unable format a CF card in the PCD 50b (ID 0, terminated)
It will format the drive and then saving banks, then it goes to saving the software, at which point it says Hard Disk Error.
I've tried a 256Mb and a 16Mb card.
Any clues?

try the PC-Card Slot with a PC-Card adaptor to CF-Card. Only this worked for me to boot the emax1 from CF-Card and to store banks on it. Set the scsi-id for PC-card to 0 (see the printed documentation from PCD) and change the harddisk's id to a non used.

good luck!

Thanks Mike,
I'm using a CF card in the PC slot. The SCSI ID is 0. The OEM hard disk is not connected while I'm testing the card reader.

Thank Mike, I'm using a CF card in the PC-Card slot. SCSI ID 0. The harddisk that came with the Emax is not connected while I'm testing the card reader.

16MB is too small to fit all the banks (35 banks)
256MB should be fine assuming the card is not "High Speed".

You may wish to try another PC Card media adapter.
Not all of them work 100%.
My PC Card to CF adapter is a Sandisk (with the red and blue label).

YMMV.

I have had identical problem with PCD-40. Wondered if it was due the drive being removable media vs. fixed

You can check your PCD-50b firmware by putting your drive into a PC with a SCSI card.

The latest is 1.28 read /write, which I have from a company that contracted to do the legacy support.

PCD-60b latest firmware that I know of is 1.24, I have that as well.

If you find you don't have this firmware version, let me know and I can provide it to anyone specifically.

Please be aware that if you damage your drive due to incomplete update I am not liable.

Regards,
Ted

Some PCDs came with read only firmware which would need to be updated. So far I have only found updates for PCD-47 and SCM Microtech has reorganized. Those updates and other info on the topic can be found here: http://www.midicase.com/card_reader_guide.htm

I've tested my card reader with other systems and know it works.
Would anyone be able to provide a disk image of one of their emax CF cards that I could try as an alternative to formatting?

All 5 of the factory images I have put on the box share site….. contact Andre finding his email address from the archive to get added to it.
There are plenty of sample images on there.

Ted

I contacted Andre about access to the box site last year and did not hear back. My EMAX has been neglected :) Would anyone be able to post an HD SE hardisk disk image here or elsewhere? I would gladly pay you for your trouble.
With thanks, Rob

You can’t upload a populated image in the files section as it exceeds the 10MB file size limit.
I am uploading the 5 Factory images in EMXP EZ1 format. I will post the link once upload completes.

Hmm,
Images transfer onto 64mb Sandisk CF card with the awesome EMXP software, but my Emax doesn't boot with 'em using a PCD50b or 60b. Boots fine off internal clunker HD. Will try purchasing a SCSI2SD and report back.
Thanks again for all your help Emaxers!

You are using the PCMCIA card slot via adapter right?

That is the ONLY slot that works on 50b or 60b in Emax - those are designated LUN 0, all other slots are LUN1 or greater, which Emax can’t see as it doesn’t know about LUN (Logical Unit Number) devices.
