E-MU EMAX 1000 Keyboard problem / No sound from outputs.

E-MU EMAX 1000 Keyboard problem / No sound from outputs.

2014-08-05 by radiokomitet@...

Ok, at first i want to sorry for my english... its not best but i will try do my best to explain my problem.

What i did:

Im not first user of emax but before it went to closet for years it worked. I never looked inside till week ago. First look and you can recognize modifications in power supply and floppy drive. It didnt even turn on. I went to best electronic engineer around and he fixed power supply... it works. I did every diagnostic test with 3.2 OS version. Everything seems to work perfect... except outputs. When im booting from MUST disk (im not sure if i made the disk right) at first sampler booting... and after about 10 secs the display become empty and only analog processing led is on. When i plug headphones into Left/Stereo output, every time im turning on emax i hear weird sound, kind of spaceship fx for about 3 seconds and it fade out but thats the only sign of life from outputs...

What i can:

Ive got access to very good electonic engineer.

I can make high resolution pictures of unit

I just need direction where to start and what possibilities ive got.

first it needs to load os and for the bank to load before you can get any sound out of it

it sounds like its not booting to the os properly

if you here the zipper sound thats a good sign that the audio outs are working

It sounds promising...

for OS disk i used file available in file section. Its 3.2 version. DD floppy disk and EMXP on Win XP with internal floppy drive. I used omniflop to format floppy to 720 kb, then again in EMXP for EMAX I format with OS installation.. everything went fine without errors.

When im booting emax from that disk ive got message "bad bank on disk" but i thought maybe its just the OS without the banks on it, thats why i get the message. OS doesnt make any problems with loading presets from other disks or while sampling sound directly to emax ram memory.

thats why you have no audio as you have no bank to load you need to edit the floppy in emxp and put a working bank on it so that you can get audio

Ok, I added Grand Piano bank to OS disk... System is loading correctly, bank too. Ive got about 30 presets to choose but when im loading any there is no sound. I checked special menu for disabled channels and there is no disabled ones. I recalibrate volume slider so im sure lowest value is the lowest and highest is the highest. Im checking my outputs with Audiotechnica headphones ATH-M40fs through all outputs and nothing. Keyboard sending midi notes as well. When im loading sequences from that Grand Piano bank and pressing play there is no sound. When im plugging 1/4 TRS Connector of headphones to the outputs i hear characteristic sound crackles (like in other vintage audio gear). What can i say more... floppy drive is not original one.

Thank you very much Jammie for your advices.

open up the machine and make sure the cable is connected correctly

now if you have no audio at all then you need and oscilloscope to check the digital data from the echip for the output channels for the dacs

also check that the keyboard is connected correctly

try using and external midi keyboard to trigger it as if the scanner chip is faulty for the keyboard it wont trigger it

not all sound disks have sequences

are you sure that one has sequences

Yes, im sure that one has sequences... i pressed select button on sequencer side from front panel and there was a pretty long list.

External midi keyboard was my first idea yesterday. I connected ASR10 midi out with EMAX midi in and EMAX recived midi correctly but there was no sound.

Ok, Ive got my old friend in parts. I think its good moment to cleanup whole machine. I used isopropyl alcohol and tooth brush on pins and pins connectors... im little scared to unplug the flat connector of ribon cable next to E-Chip because im not sure if its possibe to take out.. What can i do more ? I used compressed air to whole field of the pcb's but its still kind of old dust on it... and a lot on the back sides (without chips) of PCB's. Im not sure how can i clean them up. If any one got proven methods to share how to clean up elements of unit, I'll be grateful (front panel, keys, pcbs).

If i want to check pcb's with oscilloscope do i need to take to engineer whole unit or boards only?
Im mad at myself i never lick electonics knowledge in my life, i opended a lot of gear and pc's and macs... but never had soldering iron in my hand :( i feel like blind right now. From today its over.

Thank you again, i really appreciate your help.

you can clean the pcbs with the iso and a stiff brush

where do you live

theres lots of 74 type logic series chips that deal with interfacing with the logic board and the analog board

when pressing keys do you get any filter vca noise as the filter chips can still activate with no audio this would show that the multiplex sample and holds are working and that no audio is getting to the dacs

an service tech synth engineer would use an oscilloscope on the machine he would look at the timings data and see if the chip is doing what it is supposed to be doing as he will be able to look at the oscilloscope and look at the service manual data to see if it matches

or an logic analyzer the first place i would look is the echip voice channel pins then from there look at the logic before the ribbon cable

then i would test the ribbon cable to see if im getting the correct signals at the cable if all was well there

then i would look at the analog board and the amd interface chip and the countless logic chips there is a lot of them

long time consuming test work

i just had todo the same to an sp1200 who a customer who knows a little about electronics managed to blow up several pal chips and the z80 because he tinkered not actually knowing what he was doing
