I would try loading and saving banks and presets as well as sampling,
editing and saving. If you can get the manual just go through the getting
started tutorial sections. I assume the EMAX manual is laid out similarly
to the EMAXII's. This should test most of the important functions. At some
point in time I thought the EMAX original was sought after since it had
analog filters and 12bit sound. You could always buy it and try to sell it
later for more.

If you have not seen this yet, hopefully this will answer at least some of
the questions.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing using a sequencer in combination
with a Peavey PC1600 midi fader box, but with my EMAXII. I think all you
would need to do would be to assign the "realtime control sources" to the
available "realtime control destinations". This is done on a per Preset
basis. You will need to create separate Preset for each drum sound. Then
create a multitimbral setup (supermode) with a Preset having its own midi
channel. That way if you send the controller to adjust the filter cutoff of
the snare, it won't also affect the kick drum. By the way, on the EMAXII
the filter resonance is not an available "realtime control destination".
Your sequencer would also need to be able to do drum machine style
programming while sending the appropriate midi data, controlers and note
on/offs, to more than one midi channel. My Roland MC50 had its drum grid
editor fixed to one channel. Drum Presets usually map the sounds accross
the keyboard, this method will map them accross midi channels. I've never
had the time to setup my computer sequencer, PC1600 and EMAXII to try this.
If anyone else has input on this I'd appreciate it, or am I making a
mountain out of a mole hill with the multi channel supermode drum map?

Good Luck
