replace floppy?

replace floppy?

2004-02-03 by superautomatic2000

Seems like my floppy inside my emax fannally has called it a day. This is extremely
bad for me, since i'm going to need it in the studio in about a week. I've searched the
forum for information, but it seems like i need more. So -

Is there a list of compatible floppy disk drives somewhere? I need to replace my old
one quickly! Very thankful for answers!

/Jens

Ok, thanks for that link!
I've read somewher that it's possible to replace it with some standard floppy drives for pc. Is that true, and if so, wich drives are suitable?

Re: [emax] Re: replace floppy?

2004-02-03 by John Silveria

On an original Emax you can do a SCSI MOD (taking that you already have a SCSI
capable Emax) and use an external Zip drive. You don't already have an HD version you
can't upgrade it to work with SCSI. An internal Zip drive would burn out the power supply
if I remember right. I think Rob has a list of the floppy drives that can be used as
replacements at http://www.emulatorarchive.com

RE: [emax] Re: replace floppy?

2004-02-03 by Rob Keeble

Hi,
1) PC floppy drives need a modification to give them an ID of zero. This is
usually quite hard to do, as jumpers are obsolete and modern drives use
surface mount components. Best get one from www.route66studios.com, unless
you are handy with a soldering iron.
2) Emax SE HD models do work with ZIP100's, and an external SCSI connection
is easy to add with some hole drilling. You'll need OS Plus. Emax HD's
(non-SE) might be a problem, as the OS Plus version seems to want SE
pre-installed....ZIP250's do NOT work.
3) Other Emax's can be upgraded with SCSI but usually its very hard. Some
later Emax's had all the HD electronics but were not fitted with drives.
4) I was planning to offer SCSI upgrade kits for 50% of Emax owners, but at
150+ US dollars its unlikely to be a seller! Plans have been frozen.
5) The Emax PSU is best not loaded with a ZIP internal drive, unless you
are replacing an internal hard disk.

Rob

Hi Jens,

You can use a TEAC FD235HF floppy drive. They're half-height and grey but
easy to get, cheap and work fine. I guess you can use other drives too ...

Re: replace floppy?

from what I understand you can only use the FD235HF-A529 (at least
for the EIII). the others have a fixed ID that is not the correct one
and will never work.

From speaking to Teac, the A529 has been discontinued and replaced by
the C529. I don't know much else as I haven't ordered mine yet.

FROM TEAC:
"This floppy FD235HFA529 has been replaced with FD235HFC529 which is
alittle bit different and does not have as many jumpers on it.

"You can check with a couple of our Distributors who placed orders
with us on what we had left on the FD235HFA529.
Arrow Electronics - (888) 427-2250
Bell MicroProducts - (800) 800-1513

"To find out more information on the replacement floppy, I would
suggest you talk to someone in our Tech Support Division. You may e-
mail them at www.Dspdtsg.com or you may call them at (323) 727-4860.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
