I know there is the SE OS ... version SE HD 1.1 and for non-HD machines SE 1.1 which
are the operating systems.

I've read that the SE Upgrade Kit came with an SE Upgrade and Development disk, but I
am unsure what this did. From what the Emulator Archive says you booted with it and
then copied the OS to all your media.

The Emulator Archive does mention that if your Emax hasn't already been updated to an
SE machine then it's "rather tricky these days". The SE Upgrade disk sounds like the
Memory Install disk for the Emax II another of E-mu's clever ideas to make a disk that
runs only once. If this is true then that is what you are going to need.

It must update the boot rom. So what happens if you boot a non-SE Emax with an SE
OS? Does it simply not work?

You would think that the least E-mu could do now is to release all this stuff to sources
that can make it available.

I thought the Emulator Archive had received the rights to all this stuff and were going to
make it available, but my last email from Rob indicated that he is not updating the
sampler sections of the site anymore and is focusing on the analog stuff. So I don't know
... Rob when you read this respond :)

Route 66 Studios mentions "Emax and Emax ll Revision C software upgrades available
shortly." but I have no idea what that is. They also say " Emax SCSI chip available
shortly."

As far as sounds, I don't know of any sources for third party Emax sounds anymore,
other than from members of this list and if you get your Emax upgraded to plus status all
the OMI (17 Zip disks!) stuff you can get from Rob.

RE: [emax] se retrofit disk??

2004-02-19 by Rob Keeble

Hi,
The SE diskette updates a special EEPROM (read/write ROM) inside the Emax,
not the Boot ROM (which is read only). It is a run once diskette, it
destroys itself - much like Mission Impossible...The EEPROM also stores LCD
angle etc, and in time all the E-mu OS ideas moved into EEPROM as per
Proteus 2000's...called Flash ROM. The Se upgrade is 2 diskettes, the sounds
are left intact after upgrading.
.
E-mu did this so they could sell the SE update for 200 US dollars, there is
no way round this - unless you can clone the EEPROM...(not easy - its
serial)
They were also thinking of putting a password into the sampler, for users to
protect their expensive sampler - but obviously reconsidered this in light
of the possible support problems...

Booting a basic Emax/Emax HD with an SE or Plus OS gives an error message.

E-mu have lost or destroyed much of their past :-( At least they still have
a Modular in the Scotts Valley office. The SE upgrade master is one of the
losses (it was created on an old Mac computer), and neither E-mu nor the
Emulator Archive can provide SE upgrades. I have rescued all the remaining
documentation that E-mu Systems HQ has in 2002, and Dave Rossum has very
kindly retrieved as much binary EPROM/PAL chip information as possible
(which I have preserved and is now available to users - under license from
E-mu).

However all is not lost! The SE upgrade diskette CAN be cloned before it is
used. So if you can find someone who has one that hasn't been used...

The Emax SCSI chip is still available from component suppliers - its a
NCR5380 - as used in Macs. New PAL and Boot ROM chips are needed to upgrade
most Emax's to SCSI/HD. I could release a SCSI upgrade kit, but its is
simply too expensive to be attractive to Emaxs users, at over 100 US
dollars, the 5380 chip is close to 50 dollars alone. If you really want to
do this I can tell you how.

In reality the SE upgrade adds a few DSP features that are by now obsolete
and of little use (they are NOT real time). However SE does enable you to
get to OS Plus which provides external SCSI support - which IS useful - as
you can use ZIP100's. I can provide a HUGE Emax sample library on ZIP's - 17
x 35 sample banks.

The Emax is a very nice sampler, but unfortunately its days are numbered.
The hardware will expire, and its difficult to repair. Have a look at the
new Emulator X, with Z-plane filters it does alot more DSP than is in the SE
upgrade...

Happy sampling
Rob

Hi Steven, Hi Rob,

I have an image of an unused SE Upgrade disc. Before I used this
disc I made an Emaxutil-image. Send me your email-adress for the
image. The Emaxutil programme is in the file section.

It is right that the disc change one bit in the EEPROM, but I have
an Emax without this. In the service manual you will find an
instruction to add this EEPROM (EMAX E.C.O. #435) to the Emax. There
is also a instruction to correct a timing problem in the timig
strobe, which can cause a crackling sound on the output channel 1
and 2.
