*making* an external HD I'm sure no ones done it..

Im am seriously considering taking a maxtor or other hard drive
that would normally be mounted on the inside of the EMAX and
enclosing it in a case with a power supply and some sort of conversion
to make the pin setup work with the external scci connection.
I dont know how practical it is to do this, but the reason I want to do it
is because I moved my emaxII that has a maxtor 540s installed inside
with maybe 150 meg of the 500 filled with samples and it must have got
bumped or something because all of the banks disappeard and I had to reformat it, because
the sampler wouldnt reconize it.
I also have an old apple 100 meg external hard drive that made the trip
fine.
I have another maxtor 540 drive that I have been using as a paper weight on
my desk That I could use as a model to make the enclosure and then buy another
drive at the end of the project, I of course wouldnt be opposed to finding a 500 meg
external hard drive if I knew were I could get one that would work and wasnt alot of dough.

Im going to talk to a computer store and see how much for a supply
to power the drive and see if the cables can be done...

As I said Im sure no one ever does it this way because of the work involved and maybe the price?

Any advice is always welcome..

Matt

Hi Matt

I've made an external scsi cabinet with 1 disc inside for each of my keyboards.Furthermore I've made individual on/off switches for each disc which splits the power for the supply to each on/off switch. Be aware that the scsi cables should be as short as possible and no more than 15 feet.

Most of my E-mu keyboards can be played when the harddrive is turned off. At least as long as I don't activate any module (which loads a small portion of programs form the HD into memory). This way I can play the keyboard without the noise from the harddrive and it stresses the PSU inside the keyboard less.

Best regards

Brian

You can get SCSI External case with power supplies and fans for $6 on Ebay. These
cases allow you to insert your internal drive and it becomes an external drive.
