EMAX 2 Memory Compatibility/Transplantability

EMAX 2 Memory Compatibility/Transplantability

2005-02-09 by J R

I have a question someone may be able to answer for
me. Hopefully. Here goes..

I have two Emax 2\ufffds. One is a rack version with 4mb
of memory (includes the memory expansion board). The
other is a 2mb keyboard version.

Is it possible to take the 2mb expansion board from
the rack unit and transplant it to the keyboard unit
and make it work with an update or install disk that
I\ufffdve heard about?

If so, which upgrade/install disk do I need and where
would I acquire one?

Thanks for any and all light you may be able to shed
on this subject.

The install disk isn't available anywhere. It is a self corrupting install disk that only works
once. I'm facing the issue right now that I installed a 2Mb expansion kit into my 4Mb
Emax II and ran the install disk which didn't work. Now in order to get the memory to
install I need to find someone at E-mu who knows how to create the override codes using
an old Mac they have. From the cxustomer service rep I spoke to there is only one
person there that can do that and he hasn't returned my calls. When I get a chance I'll
convert the Memory Upgrade instructions that came with the kit, it goes over in detail all
memory expansions and talks about what is necessary to complete them. I'm not sure
you could take the 2Mb worth of chips from the mother board in one unit and add them to
the daughterboard in another.

hey folks,

I recently went through this process wit E-mu. I had an EmaxII that took a dive and stopped working shortly after. A couple years later I bought a couple EmaxII's, and took the 2mb daughterboard from my first board, and installed it onto one of the newer boards. I did have to call E-mu a few times, and sort of arrange a time when I could go through the process. But, did eventually get to run trough the process with one of the techs. It was free. not difficult, and took about 15 minutes. unfortunately it seems the problem with my first board was the daughterboard had just stopped fuctioning correctly. so I wound up with 3 2mb emaxIIs. I cant open more than 1/2 of the banks on my drives. I was able to install my old harddrive into one of the newer boards though. anyway good luck intsalling your new daughterboard, dont give up on E-mu. they can make the process pretty simple.

best, Antony West

If you are just transplanting the memory board from one unit to
another, you should be able to just swap the OS eproms to get it
working, if that does not work, swap out the whole mainboard.

Just gut the rackmount, including the output board (but not the front panel), and slap it into the keyboard case...DON'T FORGET WHICH WAY THE OUTPUT BOARD PLUGS IN!!! or you'll have a hot chip flying across the room...You might have some trouble reseating everything, but use patience and an even pressure and you'll get it...remember the output board is now upside down in the keyboard. putting the keyboard guts into the rack might be a bit tricky though, you might have to rethink your scsi options...

JR

A few years ago I got my hands on a broken Emax II that had 8MB of
Ram (6mb Ram expansion board) I took this out and put it in my Emax
II 2mb keyboard. When I rebooted it had only the original 2MB.
Here's what you need to do.

I called Emu Systems and they ran me through a process where I would
enter a code and then they would give me a subsequent code for me to
enter. From memory we did this about 5 or 6 times and at the end
when I rebooted the Emax II I had all 8MB showing.

I tried to get Emu to give me a copy of this program that would
create answer to my codes but they were unwilling to give it up.
Unfortuantley I don't recall who I spoke with at Emu to get this done
either. Keep trying Emu and eventually they will get you hooked up.

I shared this info with Rob at Emulator Archive sometime ago and he
might know the right guy to talk to at Emu.

Good Luck
Madtux
