Boot from SCSI

Boot from SCSI

2006-09-24 by Alastair Gibbs

Does anyone know if you can boot up from the SCSI port? I have a ZIP
100 drive connected with all of my samples and programs on and it would
be convenient (and probably less noisy!) to boot up from this rather
than booting from a floppy every time. Is there any setting to tell
the Emax where to look to boot up?

Also - has anyone successfully installed an internal SCSI zip drive in
their machine? I might try and do this soon.

Thanks

Just copy your op sys to the Zip and it should automatically be found
on boot up.
I have this working on both the Emax SE Plus HD and Emax II without any problems.

Lyn

Hi Lyn,

Thanks for the quick response. The problem is the emax always looks
to the floppy disk drive first and I can't find the settings where
you can tell it to look at the SCSI port first. Do i have to take
the floppy drive out?

Thanks

Yes, it always looks at the floppy but should automatically count through the SCSI chain until
it finds your Zip, which will be either 5 or 6 and terminated, yes ?

The preferred SCSI boot drive is under Master/Special.
You don't need to do anything with the floppy

Are you using the II ?

Occasionally, the II would not see the Zip, but that would be after a disconnect/reconnect
and I'd just have to reattach the SCSI cable, usually at the Emax side..

Isn´t the Floppy defined as SCSI 0?

As far as I know the Emax Plus can only boot from either floppy or
SCSI 0. So you'll need a SCSI device which can have the SCSI ID set
to zero. External ZIP drives can only have the ID set to 5 or 6.
Internal ZIP drives however can have a SCSI ID set to 0 (I think).

The EMAX-II checks the whole SCSI-chain, so if you use an EMAX-II you
can boot from any SCSI device.

Maybe I am wrong about the Emax Plus, but that's what I read about it
and mine seems also not to be able to boot from an external ZIP drive
(but I don't have a lot of experience with that machine).

Re: Boot from SCSI

Yes it is, but only on an EMAX-II (unless you change it). Not on EMAX-
HD/Plus. The internal HD of an EMAX-HD/Plus has the ID set to 0. You
can remove this internal harddrive or perhaps change its ID, and then
reassign the ID 0 to an external HD if the external device allows it.
In that case you can boot from the external HD.
EMAX-HD/Plus always tries to boot from floppy or SCSI ID 0. As far as
I know the floppydrive in the EMAX (the non-EMAX-II that is) is
simply not a SCSI device...

Re: Boot from SCSI

2006-11-03 by Andy

I used to boot off an internal zip drive (until the zip drive itself
died) it will work... however it's not really a solution for most as
usually the reason you want to boot off scsi is because the floppy is
dead. if the floppy drive is dead, you can't format the zip drive in
the first place, its rather paradoxical... if you start with the
internal zip @ a different ID format it with the floppy then put the
ZIP drive to 0, it works... ack those were painful times...
