Just discovered what you already know..

I'm the quintessential noob, and just found this online resource..

http://www.seib.synth.net/emax/banks.htm

E-mu Systems Factory Sample Library for the Emax

The Emax banks are in zipped EMX format for the PC. This means the
Emax sample diskette has been converted on a PC to a special EMX
format, which has then been compressed as a ZIP file.To use these
sample downloads, you need a copy of the EMX program for the PC. It is
a DOS program which will runs ok in Windows 95/98 (DOS mode, not DOS
window). [HS: and no, it won't run correctly under XP! It really got
to be DOS! If you haven't got a PC that's old enough, check out
FreeDOS.] It will create Emax I and II diskettes by writing the
unzipped files to a blank diskette in your PC diskette drive. It also
read Emax I and II OS and sample diskettes, and write them to your
hard drive.

..................

There's also a lot of related info in the FILES section here.. It's
VERY cool that my W98 PC should be able to create an EMAX readable
floppy.. and I found and downloaded a .zip file with the very sounds
I was seeking, in case Dave's method fails. And of course this would
be an opportunity to add to my collection of EMAX sounds.

is there a general guideline to using these utilities? a README of
some sort?

thanks,

Karl

Karl,

I'm glad you found Hermann's site. I was just going to suggest it to you! (I
actually emailed the list earlier with his site, but I inadvertantly sent it
from the wrong account and it never made it to the list).

I contributed some of my Emax library to add to his & Diego's collection.
Are there any other list members out there who might have some of the
missing images?

Regarding the utility, I seem to recall just running the .EXE (in DOS mode)
and using the menu to read/write/format Emax floppies. There is also
esynthesist's EMXP utility (which I haven't tried yet) which runs under
windows XP.

Good luck!

-Dave
