Emax I SE Power Supply gone kaput!

Emax I SE Power Supply gone kaput!

2007-09-12 by alancurrall

I just had my lovely Emax I SE Rack unit for a week, barely enough
time to go through all the samples tha came with it, when it suddenly
stopped powering up. Getting an electrician friend to test its
circuits isolated the problem as a dead power supply.

Does anyone know how likely it is that I might track down a
replacement power supply in the U.K? If this seems completely unlikely
what is the best scenario in terms of not wasting the remaining
components? I mean aren't their some much sought after analogue synth
chips on that analogue board?

Thanks for listening,
Alan

Hi Alan

I had the same problem a few months back. I've got an Emax SE Keyboard with a crapped
out power supply. Now i'm not sure, but people have replaced the old power supply with a
small form factor PC psu with some success.

Does anyone have any instructions on how to do this. I've got my luvverly Emax sitting up
against a wall, and i can't even sell it on Ebay for £50 because the psu has gone. I'd love
to resurrect it. If i can't get the PSU in my Emax fixed, god help me when the one in my
Emulator II goes pop also!

Cheers
Simon

Someone on this group managed to replace his Emax PSU by a PC ATX one.
You can find more information in the following message(s):

Have fun

Thanks E,
This information is gold-dust. I can't believe I searched this whole list and never found
this message.
I'll try this solution out and report back. It's just a pity these ATX PSUs have fan noise. I'll
just have to pretend to myself that I've got an HD and that's where the noise is coming
from.
Cheers, Alan

I had the power supply in my Emax HD/SE fail so I rebuilt it, parts
were so easy to find I rebuilt the one in my other Emax SE as well.
I would just rebuild the existing power supply before going the ATX
route.

Hmm, all very well if you're handy with a soldering iron and you know the difference between
a capacitor and a resistor. Unfortunately, that's not me. However, should you like build one
for me... I'm sure you could name your price!
Cheers,
Alan

Very basic power supply.
You could probably someone who would rebuild it for cheap.
You should at least check around before giving in.
Don't ask them to look at the Emax just show them the power supply.

Thanks for the encouragement b_k. I think I'll do that.

well, replacing it with atx doesn't eveen needs soldering skill. and
it's fun!
i'm gonna post photographs soon.
with jean marc's advices i replaced mine in a few minutes.
i was so impatient to try that at first i disassembled my main pc!
u just need to read color codes on your fried emax pc and route the
cables to the atx psupply's according to the atx color code.
i'm gonna take pictures of the connections

Thanks Davide, it'll be useful to see those colour codes.

Hiya Davide,
Any chance of you posting those photographs yet? I'm dying to get this
thing working again, but I just don't have the nerve (or maybe that's
stupidity) to do it on my own. Seeing how you've fitted an atx psu
into your Emax would help no end.

I couldn't find an electrical engineer to fix my original psu.

Cheers,
Alan
