Some questions about Emax2...

Some questions about Emax2...

2002-03-05 by skip2001fr

Hello everybody, i'm a french boy and it's the first time, i write on
this forum : I am a "new" user of Emax II Rack Turbo 8Mo RAM + 3HDD
and OS 2.14...
Well, i don't understand somethings :
1- Memory
Without any bank/presets/samples, i have 4194260 memory remaining :
ok. I just do double (why ?) these number to find my 8 Mo RAM...
Now i load a bank. So, I'm going to see how much of memory is
remaining : The display says to me : 3927937...
My question is : To know memory bank use do i must : (4194260-3927937)
x2 = 532646 that is to say #500ko ?

2- SCSI Boot (MASTER9+6)
I activate this fonction and choice a HDD...
When i switch on the emax, I can't load first HDD.
Can i have directly HDD when i switch on emax or i must use the FDD ?

3- Northstar CD for Emax2
Which of the 3 CD's is very interesting ?
In fact, i'm search acoustic instruments which use lot of memory.

Well, thanks for your answer and excuse me for my bad
english/american language...

Because the memory as shown is in 16 bit samples not bytes.

Correct. The bank is around 500k.

It absolutely can boot directly from the hard drive, as long as you have a hard drive that
powers up fast enough for it to be ready when the Emax asks for the OS (older Maxtor
drives tend to not be ready). If it isn't fast enough try setting the Emax to boot from an
unused SCSI #, when that number fails the Emax will begin searching the other SCSI
IDs until it finds one to boot from, by this time the drive should be ready.

I know nothing about any CD-Roms for the Emax sorry ... Rob can probably help you
with this one.

Hi,
I believe you can swap the contents of a Emax II keyboard into a rack. I am
not aware of any significance differences beyond the obvious lack of
keyboard, the PCB's are the same part numbe in the rack and keyboard. Some
internal interconnection cables will have different lengths.

Hi,
3 - All the Northstar CDROM's for the Emax II are excellent and still
available. I prefer Max 3 as it has synths on it, rather than orchestral
stuff - which I don't use in an Emax II. Max 3 has D50, PPG, SoftSynth,
TurboSynth, Mini, ARP etc. Max 1 is the one you'll want - it has strings,
woodwind etc.

I have the first two Northstar CDs, the pop one and the orchestral
one. I have found them to be amongst the best of the CDs available
and a worthwhile compliment to the E-mu factory set. The only reason
I didn't go for the third one, the Synth collection, was because I
have plenty of other synth sources already. I've also has access to
most of the other libraries e.g. Greytsounds in the past so my
thought are also based on comparison with these as well.

I'm not sure what you mean by interesting but if it helps, the sounds
are generally excellent quality and usable. I guess there's a limit
to how 'interesting' acoustic instruments can be but there are
certainly some 'unusual' ethnic type instruments as well as your
everyday strings and brass. The other thing that marks the Northstar
library apart is the fact they try to include different playing
styles in banks which are separate samples and not just the same
preset on a different filter setting. Oh and the 4MB banks tend to be
44.1 KHz, as opposed to the normal max sample rate of 39KHz and I
believe the Emax can play them back at this rate, even if it cannot
record. Cymbals etc certainly sound crisp.

On the downside, you'll find some duplication between the 1MG banks
and the 4MB banks (i.e. same sounds but recorded at lower sampling
rate) so the number of banks you get on a CD doesn't quite add up to
the total number of unique sound sets if you see what I mean.

Overall though, I have no regrets about my purchase, especially at
the current discounted price.

Hope this helps!

Steve
