Emax II Floppy Issues

Emax II Floppy Issues

2009-04-28 by George

Hi,
I posted here a few days ago regarding my floppy drive issues. I would get a "Disk not Formatted" error when trying to load the original library disks. Today I opened the unit up cleaned the floppy head with alcohol. I noticed when I opened it that the flat floppy cable wasn't plugged all the way in and thought that might have been the reason for the errors I was getting. But after I put it all back together, all I'm getting now immediately upon powering the unit on (even without a disk in the drive) is the "Disk not Formatted" error. By the way, I also have a Rack Version Emax II that is doing the exact same thing. So basically, when powering the unit up, I get the blinking "Disk not Formatted" error along with a clacking Floppy noise. Does anyone know this problem and what can be done? Thanks in advance for any help.

George

check that the blue line on the ribbon cable is lined up with pin 1

if the cable is back to front then you will have the signals to the floppy the wrong way round which would indicate the disk not formatted error

Hi Jammie,

Thanks for the reply. I think the flat connector had a little notch/nose and will fit only one way. Or am I wrong? I will have to open it up and again and check. Thanks.

G.

The pin on the ribbon cable connector should be on the top row .

from memory, the standard floppy connector tends to have signals on top,
and GNDs on bottom... So if the cable is upside down, you're shorting
lots of floppy controller signals to GND. not good.

Perhaps you damaged the disk sense switch, and so it's always reporting
to the emax that a floppy is in the drive, as soon as you turn it on,
and so the emax tries o read this phantom floppy, only to find there's
no data there...

What happens if you put a known good disk in the drive before powering
it on?

Try replacing the floppy first from your other emax. then swap[ the ribbon cable. If that does not fix it then you might have a bad disc controller. When swapping suspect parts do a full switch to make sure then bad goes to the good and the good goes to the bad so you know for sure what you are dealing with. Mike G
