Display Failure

Display Failure

2009-04-28 by emax_dx5

Hi folks.
I've started to experience a display failure on my Emax I (version 2 rev C) some days ago.

Sometimes, the E-Mu Systems Inc message appears without all the characters, even sometimes it doesn't appear on startup. When loading and handling presets, display fails sometimes. It is a kind of scrolling effect (some words appear in another place, then goes to the right one).

I have to point that the Emax works perfect. No freezings, no faulty process, etc. Just that issue with the LCD display. And It is not always. It use to happen when I am working for some time.. (in fact, it wasn't happening when it was cold).

I am wondering some connection problem as this one has that auful multi point socks for attaching the ribbon to the display.

Maybe some IC problems...Any suggestions?

Regards for all of you, Specially Ted (this is DX5 from Youtube :) )

It sounds like oxidized contacts. Pull ribbon cables and clean.

If you can pull I.C's at the lcd inverter and clean them, it might help.

Peace, Jesse

Hey there-
most likely is a connection problem.
Reseat the display perhaps, or resolder the pins on the LCD board....

another possibility is the LCD controller IC on the LCD itself could be
going bad too.

In that event you just replace the whole display.
They are typical $15 to $20 US....

Ted

Thanks Jesse and Ted :)

I asked before opening as it may be some common fault.
I was working in the studio before. It started again to fail, every time worse. I decided to hit twice firmly (Not hard) over the front panel, over the buttons area, and suddlenty it was fixed.

So It is clear there is some wrong ribbon connection or IC pin contact on its socked.

When I end working for this track I am involved to, I will open it for a general check. I will also remove the Keypad PCB for cleaning, as some numbers and Specially the arrow and YES/NO buttons are hard to press.

By the way, I still have pending to fix my other Emax. I was thinking if keeping it for spares, but I will fix the switching power supply and will try to locate the faulty chip who got it frozen, replacing the main ones first (processor, sub processor, etc) from the working unit to the faulty one. Ted, I will reach you if I can manage to find the bad one.

Best...

DX5
