New version of EMXP with RS422 support

New version of EMXP with RS422 support

2010-05-01 by esynthesist

The RS422 support has been released in the newest version of EMXP today.
You can download this version (for free of course) on http://www.emxp.net

As announced a while ago, this version allows serial communication between EMXP on Windows XP (or higher) and the Emax-I or Emulator II.
Sound banks can now be uploaded and downloaded without having to use a vintage Mac computer anymore...

...you will need a custom built USB-RS422 adapter though :)
Details how to build this adapter yourself can be found on http://www.emxp.net also. The thing is called EMUCOMBOX - OK, I admit this name is the result of a weak moment of low creativity.

Anyway, I'd like to give credits to and thank MrJulian (fellow member on the Yahoo Emax Group) a lot for making this possible by sending me a jumpstart prototype last year. A new world went open for Emu Emax/EII fans.

Note: in the future a smaller and easier-to-build version of the adapter may be released, based on another microprocessor board.
The current one is working fine, but be aware that some of the soldering will be quite tricky !

Have fun

Approximately how much does one of these cost to build?

Thanks,

I would say about 50 USD, that's *without* a nice case and with the wires soldered directly to the board.
Once the thing must be built into an attractive case with built-in connectors for both USB and EII/Emax cables, and with some leds on it, the price will increase a lot.

My emucombox device is just sitting in the box in which the Atmel demo board is delivered, the USB cable is connected to the Atmel demo board's native mini-USB bus, and the cable towards the EII and Emax is just a set of wires, soldered to the print board and to a DB25 EII connector and at the same time to a DB9 Emax connector. Not professional at all, but it works and this way the device is very cheap.

Here's my estimation of maximum prices for the individual parts of the Emucombox (in EUR):
- Atmel AT90USBKEY kit --> 30 EUR (includes USB cable)
- UA9638 and UA9637A line driver ICs --> 3 EUR
- Resistors and capacitors --> 2 EUR
- SUB D DB9 connector with casing --> 4 EUR
- EuroCard print board 10x10cm --> 5 EUR
- Print connectors --> 2 EUR
- Wires --> 2 EUR
But it should be quite easy to lower the total price with 20 pct...

Why not put it out for bids? How many hats do we have to wear in this life?
If you can find some other '80s instruments that could be fitted likewise,
that would make it worth someone's while to do production on...

Roginator is doing (or offered to do?) a production build for people on
the EII forums.

I'm not sure what the venture is up to, but I'm sure whatever he
delivers will be nicely built. I've seen a bunch of his DIY audio stuff.

USB to serial already built

But I have found these adapters already build:

Do they work with EMXP though?

Apparently you haven't been paying attention to the discussion of the
Serial Adapter.

The standard adapter like you have linked to is RS-232 not RS-422
(like on Emax).

Additionally, the Emax has its own serial speed clock which a normal
adapter doesn't have that option either.

So standard adapter available off the internet will never work.

I believe this has been explained several times by people making the
adapter....

Who is using the EMUCOMBOX so far? How well does it work?
