Emax SE+ not booting Plus os

Emax SE+ not booting Plus os

2010-06-30 by Augusto

Hi there, I recently bought an Emax Se plus (2100 model). Since then I've been trying to boot it in Se and Plus mode without any luck.
Tried copying the os image with Emxp and no luck, then managed to use the copyqm in a native DOS environment and copied the ZD700PLS image and no luck. The sample says 'Loading software', 'Loading bank' and then 'Wrong Software'.
I managed to succesfully copy every sound disk I wanted and also creating Emax HD 1.1 bootable disks. They work great but neither Se nor the Plus are working for me.

I'm suspecting something is wrong here. Is it possible for the seeler to change something inside the sampler? I disassembled the keyboard and took some pictures of the main boards. Seems to be a legitimate Se+. PC333 cpu board, internal SCSI CN2 free, external SCSI connected, Analog board PC345 and EChip PC349 rev.

Analog board:

Augusto-

Because it has HD and is Rev 3 (PC333) logic does not mean it is SE.
Since you say the HD OS disk works, then it sounds like you don't have
SE.

DOwnload the SE Update image file from the group files section.
Download EMXUTIL from the files section.

Format a disk on Emax
Boot a PC into dos (not DOS window in XP- real actual boot of MS-DOS
6.22 or 5.0 boot disk and run EMXUTIL
(if you don't have a dos boot disk, there is again, a file in the
group file section for this....)

Select write OS image from the menu and then the file name of SE
Update IMage.

Boot Emax from this disk now and it should update to SE.
Now SE / Plus 1.0 disk should work.

Regards,
Ted

Re: [emax] Emax SE+ not booting Plus os

2010-06-30 by Ted Summers

Please note that there is simply a flipped bit in the 93C06 that makes
Emax SE.
If somehow, that bit got lost / flipped in EEPROM, then you could lose
SE function....

I have not heard of it happening - but it is POSSIBLE.

Ted

Re: Emax SE+ not booting Plus os

2010-06-30 by Augusto

Actually Ted it is a 2100 model with SE panel and external SCSI at the back. So this a Plus version and factory Se. It should boot a Plus 1.0.
No aftermarket upgrades, it's has the factory blue SCSI port.
Upgraded SCSI Emaxes have the last 's' from Systems covered by the port. Mine has Systems an inch to the left.
Am I right? I'm just learnig everything I can.

Here are the pics:

Re: [emax] Re: Emax SE+ not booting Plus os

Yes that is definitely an SE.

But if it doesn't think it is an SE, you may have lost the bit
setting, as I said on previous email.
Run the SE update as I suggested and it should come back.

Still no luck. Today I formatted a DSDD disk in the Emax and then copied with EMXP the SEUpgrade. It boots and then after the 'Loading bank' it says 'Wrong software!'.
What's the matter with this baby?

Looking forward to hear your thoughs,
Augusto.

I cannot confirm you can make this disk with EMXP.

Please make it with EMXUTIL in DOS,

Re: Emax SE+ not booting Plus os

Correct. EMXP can not do that.

There are two options:
- The SEUpgrade file must be saved to a floppy disk with OmniFlop itself, not with EMXP.
- The Seup.em1 file must be saved to floppy with the emaxutil tool in DOS.

The SEUpgrade file is in fact an OmniFlop "dump" from a floppy disk I first created with Emaxutil and Seup.em1.

Thanks Rob. I've already been able to upgrade it to Se. Just needed to copy the upgrade with omniflop utils. Now Plus is working just fine.

Thanks,

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
