Does it matter what speed Compact Flash (CF) you use with Emax 2

Does it matter what speed Compact Flash (CF) you use with Emax 2

2011-07-21 by Matthew

I bought the PCD-50B and have successfully formatted and used a 64MB CF card with the Emax 2. It's a PNY branded card made by Toshiba. The model number is THNCF064MMA. Per a spec sheet I found online, the card supports PIO mode 4 with a sustained write max of 1.5 Mbytes/sec and a sustained read max of 6.5Mbytes/sec.

I have also tried using two different Transcend 2GB 80x Compact Flash cards. They both produce strange results which I assume are due to their speed. For instance, the cards format and verify but simply selecting them via the Drive Select button can cause presets to be created (00-99) with blank names. I've even seen an issue where accessing the drive causes the sample memory to disappear. Like I said, very strange. And these strange problems disappear after powering off and switching to the 64M CF card.

So, is my issue with these cards their size (2GB) or the fact that they are 80x speed? What is everyone else using? Can I use an 80x card (or faster) if it's 1GB or less or do I need to be looking for older Compact Flash cards that are 40x and under? I assume 40x works because 150K/sec seems to be what 1x is and the 64MB card I believe to be ~44x since ((6.5 MByte/sec * 1024) / 150) = ~44

never use transcend cards they always give errors

i use version 1 cards sandisk 512mb and never had any problems with any of my samplers most old samplers can only read upto 600mb any way and some are even smaller as in the 20mb emax1 some are just 2gb but some can partition in sizes of 2gb

i use the smaller cards as they are easier to navigate once you start using bigger cards you need to start writting down a folder type sheet so that you can remember where all sounds are

Jammie,

Thanks for the reply. You say you use version 1 cards. What do you mean by version 1? Do you mean type or speed or age? CompactFlash Type I and II have to do with the physical size of the card. SD cards have classes: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 that refer to speed. CompactFlash speed is referenced in multipliers: 40x, 80x, 300x, 600x. So I'm not sure what you mean by version 1.

Ultimately I am looking for a source of new (not used) CompactFlash cards that will work with the Emax2. There are still 512MB cards being made but their speeds are faster than cards from years past.

I should ammend my last line: There are still 512MB cards being made but their speeds are faster than cards from years past [and I'm not sure they will work which is why I'm asking if speed matters. I'm trying to avoid buying a bunch of cards that won't work that I may get stuck with if I can't return them].

Re: [emax] Does it matter what speed Compact Flash (CF) you use with Emax 2

I wouldn't use larger than a 1GB card.
Additionally- the SCSI controller in Emax 1 and 2 is an 5380 with max
1.5MB/s transfer rate.

Go with Class 1 or Class 2 cards to avoid problems.
There is no point in getting "high speed" cards- you will only cause
yourself problems.

But what do I know....

Ted

Re: Does it matter what speed Compact Flash (CF) you use with Emax 2

Hi Ted,

Thanks for the reply. The problem is class 1 and class 2 applies only to SD/SDHC cards. I'm asking about CompactFlash which has it's speed measured in multipliers 40x, 80x, 300x.

What CompactFlash speed multiplier are you using? Or are you using a SD/SDHC card?

Thanks,
Matt

type 1 cards are the slowest speed cf type 2 started to get larger and faster dont use anything thats ultra as these tend to be to fast yet some people have managed to get them to work with ultra dma cf drives

i stick to sanddisk 512mb and thats all they have on the front of the card i brought mine for £7 of flea bay

the old cards dont work on multipliers thats the ultra cards avoid them like the plague as they are to fast for the emaxes just use the original cards that just have mb sizes written on them with nothing else or you will waste your money

and avoid the transcend versions they just dont work

SD cards and Transflash with PC Card adapter.

But I have also used older, actual CF in testing in the past.
There is a database of known working Part #s on the group.

But basically, if you get a blue label SanDisk for example, it will be a
slower speed.
Like This:
http://www.amazon.com/512MB-Sandisk-Compact-Flash-Memory/dp/B000J5338W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1311271587&sr=8-3

I haven't had any problems with Sandisk....

Thx,
Ted

the old cards dont work on multipliers thats the ultra cards avoid them like the plague as they are to fast for the emaxes just use the original cards that just have mb sizes written on them with nothing else or you will waste your money

and avoid the transcend versions they just dont work
