Rs422.. again

Rs422.. again

2011-11-07 by Francis Cote

Hi all,

I have the opportunity to get a Powermac 9600 in great condition for cheap.
While there are newer ways to transfer samples to the Emax 2, I'm really
minded to make this work for at least nostalgic reasons!

Can anyone tell me if it will work with the modem port on this machine, or
do I really have to find something older than that?

Thanks

Francis

I think you're mistaken, the 9600 is not a Nubus Mac, it is in fact the last (and greatest) of the Pre-G3 Macs and will run up to 9.1 (although I have used the "old world support" to run 9.2.2 on a 8600 so that should work on the 9600 as well).

there are nubus pds slot versions and the pci version

if its the nubus pds version go for it as a audio media 2 card will fit it

dont get the pci version as audio media 3 card did away with support for
samplers in sounddesigner2 in the later software versions

both can have operating systems up to os9 but you need os7 for sounddesigner
to work best

both can have excellerator cards making then g3 processor

Odd that both lowendmac and MacTracker don't mention a Nubus 9600, only the 6 PCI slot version.
Must be pretty rare too.

Can you give us a link to the full specs? You should send this to MacTracker as it obviously a gave omission on their side!

I have an Audiomedia card lying around and have been looking at getting a nubus Mac just for that but always thought that would require me to get a very old one.

Do you know if they fit the 8100? That is what I always understood to be the last PPC nubus Mac.

http://lowendmac.com/ppc/power-macintosh-8100.html

The cards are indeed massive.

No, haven't been able to find one, nor any other usable nubus Mac for that matter. And I don't want to offer much as I'm not sure the Audiomedia card I have is actually functional.

I've tried asking for one on second hand (Mac) websites in the past but people usually don't understand the nubus requirement and you get inundated with offers of any old Mac that is out there...

easiest 1 that come up is the mac se30 these work great have 1 pds slot need a pds to nubus adapter and they come with a monitor and everything needed

if your going to use just the software version just for emax than you dont need a audiomedia card just the rs442 cable and the software its on the list and i have it at my hosting account same for the e2 which had a specific software version

Jack, actually the model you are referring to is a Quadra 950. Big machine.
The 4 digit numbers came with the PowerPc machines. I used to work at an
Apple Certified store right after they had put the PowerPC on the market. I
stopped during the Beige G3 generation.

I had planned to use Alchemy, since I don't have an Audiomedia. But, if I
could find Sound Designer II, I would be willing to get that sound card.

I've seen sound designer files on the list, are they usable versions?

Cool!

Sampler support is software related, not hardware related. I don't think it
has to do with the fact that you have a Nubus or PCI Audiomedia card.

But, all in all, I still don't know if a 9600 will function with the
sampler. Might as well try to find a Mac IIci or a Quadra.

It does in so far that Sound Designer II uses the Audiomedia card as a dongle and won't run with it.

If you use software that only requires RS422 then yes, it will work. The 9600 has two RS422 ports.

Re: [emax] Rs422.. again

So, you mean to say is that the software will specifically check for a
Nubus only card and If you have a PCI Audiomedia III card, it won't work.

Right?

I don't know about the Audiomedia III. I've only ever heard the AM II mentioned in combination with SD II.
So it might not specically check for nubus, it might just be that it doesn't work with the III at all. I don't know.

Others might know more about this.

not if you are using just the emax version if you want multipul sampler
support then you need a nubus mac with audiomedia 1 /2 or soundtools
hardware soundcard

pci is a no go as the software version for the audiomedia 3 card only works
with lowest os version 2.5 and that has no support for hardware samplers

Re: [emax] Rs422.. again

2011-11-07 by jack

sound designer 2 has various versions that work with various machines some
nead the audio card as that is the dongle

but the 9600 is a pci machine and even tho it has rs422 ports i dont know if
the sound designer 2 emax only version will work with the os thats on the
9600 be it os9

becuase if i remember correct the reason that the audiomedia3 did not do
thwe full sampler support was due to the os and not to the hardware
something changed in the os that made the midi sample transfer not work on
the later machines so they did not write a new coded version for the newer
os

now if you have a os7 compatible mac and you get the image for
sounddesigner2 for emax then you dont need the hardware card as dongle but
it will only work with emax

no other samplers are catered for

esynthesis can you con firm this for me as you know as much as me about this
working

now if you dont want to bother looking for a mac to use with this software
then you can use emxp and the newer tiny rs422 interface card then you can
use from a pc

that is the only other way

as i use both the emax e3 and emulator2 i use the software still as its the
easiest way to make patches as you can edit all params envelope settings and
modulation and you make a bank up of presets and then dump them

So you are saying that the sound designer 2 image from the list works
without a Digidesing card or dongle of some sort, on OS 7.x. Right?

If so, then I'll continue my search for Mac II or Quadra. An SE\30 could
also be an option.

Thanks

yes just need a mac with os7 pre pci

and i would say the cheapest option would be an se\30 and an scsi to ide cf
card adapter for the hard drive no noiseas its a monitor and mac all in 1
only need a keyboard and mouse and they have scsi so upgrading hd is easy i
use a little tower with seven cf scsi card drives in and i can plug it into
my samplers aswell i have several different variations of scsi to ide
adapters for different samplers as some work better than others with
different makes

I'm getting a Quadra 700, with mouse, keyboard and screen for 20 bucks.
Should do!

Can I run 7.5.5 or 7.6, or do I have to stick with 7.1?
