Emax Beginner - No Boot

Emax Beginner - No Boot

2012-08-11 by J

Hello EMAX users!

Trying to boot Emax keyboard. I have Emax 1 Model 1000 with PC333 board. Booting with floppy disk. Power on, says E-mu systems - please insert disk. Floppy inserted, Now loading software.

Drive appears to begin loading for a second or two. Loading stops, and the sampler freezes. I have tried a few different boot disks, all with same result.

Occasionally upon boot attempt, LCD display text will become garbled and a few LEDs will light. This changes with every boot attempt, with each try freezing up. Most times the display remains with Now Loading Software.

I have not used Emax before, and do not know the usual loading procedure. Not aware of the duration when booting from floppy. Assuming it would take 15-30 seconds to load the OS.

Any suggestions are welcome. I am familiar with keyboard instrument repair..but this is my first attempt with sampler.

I do hear a faint squeal from the power supply. Was concerned of perhaps bad capacitors, or other components in PSU.

Thank you,
J.

Thank you for the quick response.

I am using OS 3.2 created from EMX. The disk was made by another person. Have also tried making my own boot disk from EMX, and another that was made with an Emax. I do not think I have the SE version. The top says just "Emax". My eeprom is version IP349C. My analog board does read "EMAX HD No more floppy seconds".

I have had the keyboard for several years now. Just now getting around to making it work. The person I purchased from told me all I would need is a boot disk. Originally I had thought the floppy drive was bad.

The Emax would try to load but say Disk Not Formatted. I replaced the drive with a Chinon FZ-357. After replacing the drive is when I was able to get the Emax to actually try to start loading.

Is there another type of OS for the basic model? I was thinking it had something to do with the OS version, as the Emax was actually trying to load. It just seems to get stuck after a certain point. Is there a message displayed if loading the improper OS?
