Weird power supply [?[ issues....

Weird power supply [?[ issues....

2002-11-22 by Christopher James Mazur

I've been a faithful Emax II owner for 10 years now. I just
recently added an Emax II rack (Upgraded to 8mb) which I got off of
a reputable dealer from eBay. Having absolutely no problem, ever
with my 2mb Keyboard unit this was a welcome addition...

When I received the Emax IIR it would boot up alright, but not
recognize it's full 8mb, it was recognizing 2mb, but would boot up
with "WARNING! Sound MemorySize Error".

After determining that the 6mb expander kit came loose, I reseated
it, and firmly applied the screws again. Works perfectly, not
strings attached, except...

Now, the power supply is acting up, sometimes turns on, sometimes
not at all, sometimes will turn off in the middle of a session.
Needless to say, my Emax isn't road worthy, and barely suitable for
pre-production work, It's like there is a breaker box inside the
emax, even though I'm fully aware of the fuses in the power supply.

Has anybody dealt with this? What the heck are the replacement
costs of a power supply? or can a generic one be used?

Frustrated,
Chris.

It sounds to me as if a component on the board is dying of old age. You
could have a tech. or service center resolder the components to the bottom
of the PC board on the power supply and see if that helps. I once found that
to be the cause on intermittent problems.
