Emax 1 HD SE gain issue

Hi all, I have an issue with my emax HD SE where it will sample just fine with a hot source, but if I sample a quiet source and adjust the gain upwards from 0db all I get is nearly total distortion. Have any of you experienced anything like this? Regards, Nigel
