Re: Bob Moog movie on Showtime

2007-03-16 by nicholas_kent

It's a film definitely worth watching but I'm sorry to say the first post really was semi-
pointless. Even if you were in the U.S. you not only need cable TV but jhave to pay X
dollars a month on top of the cable bill to get Showtime programming. The film has been
shown all sorts of places (not for free) and as mentioned in the followup is out on DVD for
pretty cheap for quite some time.

Not quite as good but also well worth watching is the poorly titled "Bruce Haack: King of
Techno". It suffers the same flaw as the Moog film in having a fair number of people
gushing about the subject who don't really know too much tied in with a new not really
essential tribute project the filmmaker was involved in putting together with whatever
musicians they could recruit to be part of it.

The other problem is Haack died in the 1980s in contrast to Moog who was in good health
and cooperative with the Moog film. The Haack film was shown on cable TV in a cut down
form. Sadly except for an audio interview in the bonus section Haack's home made
equipment dating back to the 1960s is still very mysterious.

The quick rundown on DVDs is the format of the DVD is significant if you have a domestic
stand alone player meant for sale in your country. If you watch DVDs onm your computer
then the format isn't significant. What is significant is commercial DVDs are supposed to
have what's called a Region Code to prevent them from playing in other parts of the world.
U.S. DVDs are only supposed to play in the U.S. and Canada. But there's a big grey area of
equipment that ignores the region code. Generally if you have one of these all region
players or DVD drives you know about it.
