Eml synthesizers

I was checking out a friend's EML 200.  I noticed that the ring mod sounded
terrible with either of the two saw oscillitors, but sounded fine with any
of the three waveforms from the "Master Oscillator".

Does anyone know why??  Is it there difference between the two types of
oscillators on the 200 or is this something peculiar to the 200 ring mod??
