Eml synthesizers

Hi People,

Just for kicks, I thought I'd point you folks to a "vintage" track I did using
an Electrocomp 101.  See the bottom of this page:

The text there reads as follows:
EC101 was originally recorded at the electronic music studio at the Ohio State
University in the spring of 1975. It was done on an Electrocomp 101 synthesizer
and a two channel, open reel tape deck. I recorded one channel, rewound the
tape, and recorded the other channel without listening to the previous material.
To prepare the piece for Tape95, I played the original tracks through a BBE and
applied EQ at the mixer. The left tape track was fed to a delay unit which
returned to the mixer, EQed and panned right. The right tape track was fed to
another delay unit which returned to the mixer, EQed and panned left. All four
signals were sent to an old Alesis Microverb II and each delay unit's output was
cross connected to the other delay's input for a little regeneration.

There's a bunch of little EML component boxes up for auction at Ebay.

 The guy gave me the OK to post his scans  to the photo archive here. He
states clearly that the boxes are mostly untested and sold as is. Get
this---he tells me he had them out with a "buy it now" of $100 and there
were no takers! Now bidding is up over $400 with  4 days left. AARRGGHH!
oh well....

had at Ohio State? I own one of them; unfortunately it ceased to 
work about a year ago. It worked fine for the two years before 
that. I bought it from a guy who had gotten at the Ohio State 
auction, couldn't figure out how to use it, and left it under his bed. 

It worked great for a year and a half, then started working about 
half the time. I never knew whether it would play or just emit a 
low sign wave. Which is all it does now, just a low pitched hum. 

Does anyone happen to know what would cause this? And if so, 
what might fix it? Is it something an electronic hobbyist should 
fix, or should I be looking for an expert?

Hey, Alex
  Really have no way to know how many there were/are. I still hear stories about people finding EML synths ( and Moogs, Arps, 
Korgs, etc. for that matter) gathering dust in a music department storage room at some school. Never happens to me though.

There's not a whole lot of troubleshooting I know for the 101. Actually it may not be  that serious. The hard ones to track are the 
little intermittent bugs. One weak point to check would be the multipin connector that plugs the keyboard to the control panel.  I do 
know that if that cable is bad, the symptons could be as you describe. There could be a lot of other causes  too. Try running a patch 
cord from any of the VCO output jacks directly to a guitar amp. Just be careful and make sure you keep the amp turned down so 
there are no nasty surprizes. You should be able to hear something if you fiddle around.  You can see if any of the controls are 
working. Might help you narrow down the problem a bit. Good luck.

Hard to say what's wrong with it, but do you have any test equipment?  I'd
start by disconnecting the internal power supply from the rest of the synth,
then measure the output to see if it's got the voltages that are supposed to
be there.  If that part is ok, I'd reconnect the synth and start testing one
module at a time.  If the VCO isn't working, do you have any other modular
gear that you can patch into it?  You could patch an external VCO into the
VCF or VCA to see if you get an output.

Often old electrolytic caps dry out and die.  Power supplies usually have
several (often larger ones), so that is a good place to start.

Well, I've plugged a guitar through the synth in
various configurations to an amp, and the results are
pretty bad. I can patch from multiple mixer to
multiple mixer to output mixer and get a signal, but
nothing form the oscillators, the filter, the
envelope, the modulator, the pre-amp.
Sometimes I get radio signals, though. Strange. Looks
like its time to take the cover off.

Hi Alex,

There was only one 101 that I knew of when I went to OSU.  It was already there
when I took electronic music classes from Mary Beth Nelson in 1975.  She was
replaced by Dr. Tom Wells who was still there when I graduated in 1979.
