Youre on the right track. It could be a bad DB25-CN50 cable, a bad CD terminator plug (have you tried swapping the terminator plug and CN50 cable connections on the back of your CD-Rom?), the internal cables may not be not be seated properly/disconnected inside your external CD case, or your CD-Rom drive itself may have become faulty.

PS: Some SCSI cables are self terminating which could explain why your Zip cable allows boot without the drive attached.
