Hello, my eII had in former times problems with detecting change of disk occuring randomly but normally load disks well, no read error. But now it doesn't detec even during boot that there are disks inside, it scans the drives and they even spin but pretend that there is nothing inside. Do anybody had this before, I guess it is a mechanicly problem. Thanks in advance, Malte Steiner -www.block4.com- --

Hi, Sounds like the drive can't read the diskette. To fully diagnose the problem we need to know what the LCD says. e.g. Boot in Progess or This Will Take a While. However the first steps are: 1) Clean the head with head cleaner/isopropanol 2) Check the floppy drive cable is well seated at both ends, its unlikely to be a problem though 3) Use the newest OS diskette you have, and see if its the same problem with upper and lower drives. If head cleaning doesn't work then its either worn out media, duff drive(s) and last of all a problem with the floppy controller chip. Hope this helps. I'll get some of the disk diagnosis text from the service manual onto the web site. Rob

Hello, thanks for your information. Display says 'Boot in progress' and changes to 'insert diskette' ignoring the fact that there are some inside, still scanning drive 1 and 2 and so one... How can I clean the headers btw, how can I reach them safly? I got some 51/4 cleaning floppys but I think due the ignorance of my eII the heads don't come out of their inital position. Greetings, Malte Steiner -www.block4.com- --

Hi Malte, I had this problem as well. The Emu couldn't read from any drive. I have cleaned the heads several times with no result. A swap from upper to lower drive helped for a short time. The only solution that brought me back in business was to replace one drive to a 3 1/4 drive. You can buy it at the EMU shop. Not cheep but it's worth because the emu works fine after that. Problem when the upper drive doesn't work is to get formated disk for the lower drive. My upper drive worked one more time(after I hitted the drive some times) so I made could make some formating disks. Hi, It sounds like a read problem, especially if you are confident the media is okay. The head of the floppy drive is quite large and can be accessed from the right hand side of the drive, you may need to take the drive out the EII to reach it properly. Be careful not to touch the PSU, as it can give you a jolt even when powered off. Use a cotton bud. I can send you a photo if you are having problems tracking the head down. For users who can't boot from 5.25" the 3.5" floppy drive kit comes with a free OS diskette (you choose which version) on 3.5" media, so you can boot up the EII. Rob

Hello, yes please send me a pic, I would like to try to clean them. Yep, Joerg, I am from Hamburg. And you? Rob, how much would it cost such a drive kit to ship to germany? With friendly greetings, Malte Steiner -www.block4.com- --
