Powerbook external FW drive for EXS24?

Powerbook external FW drive for EXS24?

2004-03-23 by lilainjil

Can anyone recommend an external firewire drive for my Powerbook G4 800mhz?

The idea is to transfer my desktop's EXS24 library - around 30 to 40 GBs. The drive
would be used almost exclusively for the EXS library, although maybe called into
action for audio recording if the internal can't handle it.

Will the Lacie pocket drives work okay for this? Small size is important. Bus-powered
would also be nice. What about those Porsche-designed versions?

Thanks,

Andy

Hi

You got to be carefull with potential latency problem; I don t know the size
of your internal drive, but have you thought about making a partition and
keeping it ³inside the box² ? If your drive is not big enough, seriously
think about replacing it with another one instead of getting external. I m
not saying FW is not good, but since size and power consomption seems to be
of an importance for you, can t beat internal drive for speed and space ! If
you do go external, lacie is always very reliable and lately, they came up
with firmware upgrade improving both FW 400 and 800.

You're going to trade drive speed for bus-powering in most cases. I
just bought the Hitachi 7K60 which is a 60GB 7200RPM 2.5" drive that I
tossed into an OWC firewire 400 case for my 12"Al. I haven't actually
tried it bus-powered yet, but the OWC guys told me it would not run
without external power.

There are many other 2.5" drives that spin at 5400 and 4200 but more
than likely your internal drive also spins at one of those rates (most
likely 4200 which I think is what mine spins at) so while you should
see some improvement (streaming samples off another drive should give
you better performance) you won't see as much as getting a separate and
faster drive.

It's your call. I've always been a proponent of buying the drive I want
and enclosure I want and putting them together and OWC has been good to
me in the past.
