Re: [gsp-2101] Re: Best power amp to use w/2101?

2007-02-21 by jim morrison

its all in preference! i haven't used an Ada Mp1 in 10-15 yrs,but after i plugged one in the other day it just reminded me of why i really wasn't that impressed w/it way back when they 1st came out! I was tempted to try one of the Mp1's w/the 3.66 mod or whatever it is,but never got the chance??, and i only ever tried 1 triaxis and it just didn't impress me(and that was thru the 50/50 i think and thru the 9200),and normally i really like Boogie stuff as i've had most of their top line amps(22/50 cals,dc5,tremoverb dual rects, and a few others!)i have a studio friend/guitarist who swears by the triaxis, but i've yet to play 1 set up well?they other fault i find in boogie is they seem to be a great 1 sound amp,but as soon as u tweak a know on 1ch it seems to effect the others?i think this is a result of everything in their circutry being casscaded?(all in a single chain) i also believe theres alot to be said regarding the choice of pwr amps! as i tend to believe you can run most anything in to a good pwr stage and sound 1/2 way decent!!(but still only as good as your weakest link!)and think about it most tube preamps such as the triaxis,mp1's and 2101 don't use enough plate voltage to do much to their Ax7's anyways??(somewhat of a gimmick?) tube sound is mostly comming from a pwr section so what the difference if its a 2101 infront of a massive tube amp such as the Marshall 9200(w/a zillion tubes)cooking?? or a head w/a preamp built in??even a Boogie is kinda simplistic in terms of the preamp section in their heads(before hitting the pwr section)i guess in my opinion the trade offs weighed heavy in favor of the 2101 set up! especially in versatillity!!!

Jim,

I'm surprised you say you had a Triaxis or even an MP1 and you still
preferred the 2101. Well, or may be because you like that 80's metal
sound a la Lynch. I do agree that the 2101 has got great 80's-type of
distortions.

But if you ever wanted to get that raw mid-freq rich sound of a pure
tube distortion, there is no way you can emulate that with the 2101.
Simply put, its tube circuit can not be compared to a stand-alone tube
pre-amp like the Triaxis, Bognet, ADA, etc.

My basic rig consists of a Triaxis, 2101 and a couple other things.
Then it's fed into a Mesa 20/20 tube power amp that drives a Mesa 2x12
tuned 3/4 closed back cab. Lightweigh, practical, portable, terrific
sounding. I don't do it because it is fashionable to have the Boogie
logo up there, but because I believe in their sound and quality, and
they're made in USA, but it is just me.

However, I don't think I've ever cranked the 20/20 up to saturation
(it is hell loud!, even at moderate volume), so can't really tell you
much in terms of quality or compare it against others.

Gus.

good to hear from someone wh has had a 9200 also for opinions! i even
had a triaxes and boogie 50/50(not nearly as good!) also triaxes into
my 9200 and the 2101 still sounded better! i am bidding on a
microtube200 as we spk! i also have an ada mp1 that i just hooked up
to the 9200 a cpl days ago and still no comparison to the 2101!~and
the mp1 is noisey as hell!,the only complaint i ever had w/my 2101 set
up was that mine seemed real prone to unwanted squeeling fits on stage
at higher volumes if i was any where near my amp set up!??(someone
else mentioned that it could be from vibration from the 4x12 cab as
the amp/2101 rack sat right on top of it?) the 9100 marshall was even
worse(less headroom i imagine?)thanks again Jim as my typical type
sound i like more of a george lynch 80's metal tone!
