the "dual preamp" 2101 connection method

I posted this question a while back w/ no responses, so I thought I'd
try again.

The 2101 manual (v3.0 software) describes a setup where you use both
the 2101 preamp and the guitar amp preamp (i.e., my Marshall) but
using a "y cord" and the FX Loop Sum, No Sum, and Bypass modes so
that you always have the digital effects in the effects loop of the
guitar amp, but you can select which preamp is being used (the 2101
or the amp's).

I have had little luck with the setup. Doing it exactly like the
manual says does give very good results. The preamps are never
separated and always seem to run simultaneously, regardless of
settings (although which is most prevalent DOES changes depending on
the FX loop control).

What I'm looking to do in keep the digital effects in the effects
loop of the marshall, but be able to select the 2101 preamp when I
want it and keep it out of the way when I don't. As with most front
end "boxes," the 2101 seems to greatly reduce the effect the guitar
volume has on the tone of the amp (that is, you can't really go from
clean to crunch on the amp using the guitar's volume with the 2101
preamp on the front end).

Anybody ever successfully conquered this setup? I'd love to hear
from ya.

BTW, I run an '82 American Strat w/ EMGs (Gilmour set) and an Epi Les
Paul (w/ Duncans) into the 2101 (v3.0) then into a Marshall DSL201
(20watt 1x12 combo, channel switching, single input [hence the y
adapter needed for the manual's set up]). The DSL201 is great
because you can drive the power tubes (2xEL84) to max without killing
all carbon-based life forms within a 2 mile radius.
