Re: GSP tubes and amp

2005-08-19 by gusfmm

I'm very intrigued about all this. Two comments:

- Thinking that the 2101 would sound like a Triaxis is like wishing
a Hyundai ran like a BMW. Never gonna happen no matter what. The way
the 2101 tube distortion circuit is designed is quite different to
the Triaxis circuitry. The sound wave generated by each one is quite
different and this is something you can't solve (or replicate) with
plain EQ. You may think it sounds somehow alike, but I assure you
there is no way you can replicate a Triaxis Lead 2 red mode on a
2101.

- More a question than anything else. Power amps really show their
particular sonic character when crancked up and tubes begin getting
saturated. At low power (volume), you should hardly hear a
difference. When you guys talk about using a 2:90 or a 50:50 making
a whole big difference to the 2101, I'm assuming you are refering to
that situation; that is, using it crancked at high volumen, right? I
use a Mesa 20:20 and I think it's a great thing, but most of the
time (since I'm not gigging frequently) I use it at relatively low
volume. So if you were to ask me: does it make a difference
compared, for instance, to going directly to my console and my self-
amplified Whaferdale monitors, I'd would answer: very minimal. I do
think though that your whole setup can make a difference, and
probably the most important factor would be your cab. Different
cabinets can make you "perceive" a whole different character in your
sound. Could you guys please comment on this so that we have a
clearer picture of where you're coming from?

Gus.
