Distortion

2001-12-06 by BlueBandit20@aol.com

Hello Dieter:

My 2101 is from 8/94 and has version 1.06.06 (is that bad??). My distortion
level seems to vary. For example, on the factory preset # 48 Gilrock Swirl
(on mine at least ... I don't have the "Artist" upgrade) when I switch on the
channel sometimes the distortion doesn't sound heavy. If I switch up a
channel and down again, it gets heavier. Sometimes it takes a few "switches"
to get the full distortion. I unplugged the 2101 foot controller to make
sure that was not doing this. I swapped out the original tubes for some
Grove Tubes GT12AX7Rs. The problem still existed (it's been about a year.)
Obviously, I haven't played it a lot, BUT I AM NOW!!!!!! If you have any
ideas I would really appreciate the help!!

Thanks

Hallo Blue Bandit!
Hmmmm.... the first thing I would try is a factory reset (press and hold "1", switch on 2101, release "1", press "up"). Dont forget to bulk dump before doing this.
Have you experienced any other abnormalities?
Then check, if the problem only appears on one Tube- section or on both.
Check the voltage on the optocoupler pin 1 (U37 for V1 and U38 for V2). The voltage is the Gian - control- Voltage. It must be the same in both cases (failure appears or not).
Tell me the results.

Distortion

2004-09-10 by ryan

Hi everyone,
I have had my digitech for about two months now and I have failed
to get a good distortion out of it. Some of the clean tones seem to
distort out. Is there something I am doing wrong. I just replaced
the tubes in it not to long ago. This is the equipment list that I
use. I have a mesa boogie 50/50 power amp, GSP 2101 with artist
upgrade 3.0 no PPC. I am using a gibson les paul special and a
marshall 4X12 slant cabinet. It seems like no matter what I do I can
not get the tone I want. the guy who had the 2101 before me had some
awsome patches but I had to do a factory reset and replace the
battery so I have since lost them. I just want some good tone.
Anyone got any suggestions???

Try using the XLR outputs instead of the 1/4 inch outputs and see what happens. Ofcourse, I used to plug right into an amp that had XLR inputs and I don't know if your amp has them. Believe me, I know your problem and even though the XLR jacks helped a lot, it still did not satisy me and my GSP2101 has sat there in a box for many years now almost in new condition without getting used much since it was new. It's the regular version. I have some upgrade chips but never installed them because the people that had my same complaint got no help in the distortion area from them. It's a matter of some people liking this unit's distortion and others not liking it. Oh, and you will ask a million people on forums at music stores, etc, etc, etc and it will still be almost the same. The only reason I have not sold it is because people buy it for peanuts. I don't want to give it away cheap unless someone I know personally is poor, wife died, got his leg cut off, etc. You know, REALLY down on his
luck. OR someone give me $350 and not a penny less. I don't want to hear about ebay this and ebay that from people. I know already. Thanks.

Make sure you are not clipping the digital section by having the
analog section too hot -- look at the LED lights next to the main
display while you're playing. If you get the red light often,
you're clipping the digital section and nothing sounds worse than
digital distortion.

Also, run the 2101's output at about 12 o'clock into your Mesa. Any
higher and you could be clipping the inputs of the Mesa.

Also, experiment with EQ and the various types of distortion. I
don't know what sort of tone you are after (blues, metal, grunge,
etc.), but I'm pretty sure you'll find something you'll like.

I found changing out the stock 12ax7's tubes was a good move as well.

I think the primary things are to make sure your guitar is not
clipping the 2101 and the 2101 is not clipping the Mesa. Then it's
in the EQ and distortion settings.

Good luck.

tap on your right and left arrows under display, press button under MVol or (Master volume) and turn value down with your data wheel. You can play as you do this until you stop seeing the clipping. Watch the leds in the display window. Hope that helps.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: Distortion

2004-09-14 by Jorge

Just to recap on my last post. The only way I got rid of that lousy "fuzz" sound from every single darn distortion setting was to run out from the XLR jacks on the back of the GSP2101 into an amp that has XLR inputs. I still wasn't happy with the results but it cleaned it up big time. Try that if all other suggestions don't work.
