I've tried a lot of different tubes in the 2101. The NOS RCA's I'm using now sound much better that the GT's and Penta's that came with the two units I have. They are much more harmonically rich and alive sounding. The OEM tubes went into the trash.

So I'm getting that they have to be matched or some people are just saying buy a pair and toss 'em in.

What will be the consequences of just buying any tube(s) and installing it. Am I risking just poor sound or damage to the unit?

No risk of any sort. These are PREAMP tubes and NOT power tubes. As a matter of fact I highly recommend trying several different types until you find the tone you're chasing. They're relatively inexpensive so go for it.

I've bought from the Tube Depot online. Good stuff.
