HYS 1 - Building PPC210

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- HYS (Help Hourself) Document. Section 1: Building the PPC210 The PPC210 is not available anymore, so if you want it, you must build it. You need the following Parts: a original PPC 210 as pattern 1 board (see Text!) 4 plastic- screws (M3 x 20) 12 plastic- nuts (M3) 1 2-line 30 pin connector, female 2 tantal-capacitors 10 \ufffdF/ 35 Volts 5 multi-shifted ceramic- capacitors 47 nF 1 S-DISC-I- Processor in PLCC 84 housing (see Text!) 1 PLCC84 -Socket 6 DRAM's 4 x 256 k in ZIP 20-housing <= 70 ns rating (see Text!) You'll get all parts in every electronic- shop, exept the board and the processor. The PROCESSOR is available as a spare- part. You'll get it from the Digitech- supports, which are listed in the owners-manual. In Germany it costs about 60 Euro. It's very important that you take a S-DISC I, not a S-DISC II- processor, because a S- DISC- II- processor musten't be combined with a S-DISC-I- processor, which is installed in the most 2101. The BOARD: Digitech don't give out their schematics, thier layouts and their software. This is OK, because these are secrets of the Digitech- Company. And noboby should abuse their knowledge, otherwise the time in which we get such fabulous effect-processors as the Digitech GSP 2101 will be gone. But the layout of the PPC- board is very simple. There is no secret with it. I drew the layout in Eagle. You must understand that I couldn't give it out, because I don't want to get problems with Digitech. You can easily draw the layout in Eagle or another Layout- software. It takes about 1 or 2 hours. But for this you need an original PPC210, where you can meassure the connections with a Ohm-Meter or something. Please remove the S-DISC out of its socket for this! (Use a PLCC- removing tool!!) It's only a double- sided board. Make sure, that you create no errors on the board. You have to compare every connection with the original PPC210!! If you create an error, the PPC won't work, or the 2101 may die!..... so be careful!! Notes: -Don't change the routing of the conducting pathes! -Create the same polygons for plus and GND on the top and bottom! -Don't change the width of the conducting pathes for the power supply! If you have created the layout, the next step is the etching process You could do it at home, or you give the board in order to a board- firm. You can easily find such firms in the net and send them the layout via eMail. In Germany the PPC-board costs about 20 Euro (all in all.. via mounting, drilling...) . If you want to do it by yourself, keep in mind, the bord is double-sided. Moreover there are a lot of vias to mount. So I think it's easier to give this job away. If you have the board ready- compare the connections again with the original board! The DRAMs: It doesn't matter which manufacturer you choose. You only have to pay attention to the rating and the housing. The rating must be 70 ns or better. And the housing must be ZIP 20. That's all. Maybe you could check out the crosslists at: http://www.rehag.de/crossdr.htm If you have all parts together, solder them to to board. Compare with the original PPC. Notes: - Pay attention to the correct polarity of the tantals- or they will go - boooom! - Pay attention to the correct direction of the PLCC- socket. - Make sure that there are no soldering- bridges between the pads. The installation of the PPC is described on: http://gsp2101center.home.dhs.org/ The only difference is, that you have no plastic- standoffs. Use the plastic- screws to mount the PPC. You have to remove the main- board out of the chassis, to put the screws throug the holes. Screw the plastic nuts to the Screws. Don't use metal- screws or nuts, or you'll cause a short-circuit fault! Use the other 8 nuts to mount the PPC on the Screws. That's it.
