I'm no expert on the different manufactures of Strat guitars, but I thought I would just put my two cents worth in on this suggestion of an Ibanez S series guitar.
I don't think the Ibanez S series would satisfy anyone who has to have a classic Fender Strat sound. It would mostly have to do with the unStrat like bridge and I guess the character of the wood and body shape itself. I don't think that different pickups would get you what you wanted either. On the other hand, people put all kinds of pickups in their Strats, so you can't really know what a person's ideal Strat sound sounds like. The necks on the S series guitars are of the same scale length, but are flatter in profile compared to the classic Strat shaped necks. They do feel quite different, but I like them.
Like the man said, " Do yourself a favor and get an Ibanez S series. ". Well, at least give one a try before you buy.
Hey BIGMARK, you should tell us why you like the Ibanez S series guitars. I was at the local music store and picked up an amber ;S160 quilt maple top for a test drive. I thought it was the best "Bang for the Buck" guitar on the market. Even better that the other moderately priced S series models. I have tried at least three different S160s since then. They keep getting snagged by some lucky soul before I can talk myself into buying another guitar for myself. A great variety of tones and a very well built ax, all for only $490.00 Canadian. If I got a floating tremolo model, I would have to shell out the extra cash for a model with the Low Pro Edge system. I don't really care for the cheaper Trem II bridge in any of the Ibanez models.
Well Ric, I can't give you any suggestions for other options of Strats. The truth is that you have more experience and expertise than I have, when it comes to Strats. Tom Anderson makes great Strats, but very pricey. There, that's one to suggestion to chew on. ;0)

I also like the s series. Reasons:
- thin neck
- good function of most mechanic parts
- you get it with neckhum/humsplit/single/humsplit/bridgehum equipment
- very good vibrato
- hangs and "feels" good
- good sound
- the frets are standard and easy to replace
But there are a lot of bad things:
- all mechanic- parts are not made of stainless steel. they will corrode sooner or later. The screws are only made of simple steel. Very bad!!
- the strings will dig into the riders on the bridge- because the riders are also only made of cheap steel. I don't understand why. tool steel would be better.
- very low quality of potoentiometers
- phone plug. A phone plug is not adequate for guitars. I dont understand why the most guitars have that fucking phone plugs. phone plugs have a very small contact area, and so the contact can't be good. XLR- plug would be better.
- the 2 plastic- rings of the vibrato are worn out very quick. they have to be replaced very often.
- No spring- holder for the vibrato springs are mounted.
- The black box (which hold the guitare tuned if a string tears apart) is not mounted. If a string tears apart, the guitar will be detuned.- Very bad
