no sound, no display... bad news I suppose...

2016-09-28 by somethingkillingyou@...

...turned on my K5, and just as I mentioned in the title, no sound and a blank display! yesterday it was fine.

tried to power on and off but nothing changed, except for one single time, when the display showed some garbage, then nothing... any hint? what could be?

- power cable
- fuse inside
- power supply - el. caps, power regulators - check output voltages
- transformer
- lose connector - reseat
- dirty or oxidized connector - c lean & reseat
- damaged OS in Eprom
- reseat all IC's in sockets
- dead backup battery - replace it
- garbage in RAM - send good data by MIDI, factory data for example

If all Daniel suggested fails, try checking the reset circuit, I posted a sort of guide a while ago. Those reset ICs seem to fail from time to time, specially if the you have a dodgy PSU (e.g. unstable Vcc due to bad supply caps).

PS before any major repairs, try everything Daniel mentioned, as your problem is likely to be somewhere there.

Good luck!

test for blown fuses in supply then test for ripple no load test of psu. that
would be the first thing to check once you have a healthy supply then move onto
other parts 90% of the time its failing psu filter caps after the rectifier

yep! my K5 is currently under repair... I tried to send sysex but the program said the K5 was not responding, as I supposed, the synth was totally "locked". tech said it is the PSU, but he's afraid there could be some other problems too AFTER the PSU...
while he was there, he checked the battery and it was like new! the charge was still more than 3 volts (like 3,18!) after 29 years! cool! so at least I'm not gonna replace the battery anytime soon...
anyway when it will be the time, I guess I'd want a battery holder instead of the soldered battery...
hope to have good news soon... I'll let you know how it will end up! thanks anyone who contributed this topic!
