I need a guide please!!

I need a guide please!!

2004-05-24 by pabloaparo2000

Hi, my name is paul, i'm from argentina. I've recently baught a K5
synth so i'm iniciating inthis new world. I've downloaded the PDF
manual you posted and i'm reading it. But i have a really big problem
and i'm desperate. It turns out that the sounds that came preset with
the synth are awfull. I've been trying to send patches with many
different programs but must have been doing something wrong. The
synth seems to be working properly. When i connect it MIDI and play
it with cakewal it doesn't seem to have any problems. But apart from
using it MIDI i would like to have some good sounds indepedently from
the computer. I just want the synth to have a good piano, some
strngs, maybe a hammond, the standard sounds so i can take it to play
with my band without bringin the whole computer. I've tried with
patchers like the SySex of cakewalk and i couldn do much. Then i
tried with the kfeunf editor and it seemed to have a connection
problem (i could recieve from the synth but i couldn't send). And
finally i been triyn to execute the Doctor T's atari editor with the
steem emulator and it just doesn't want to work.
So please i need someone to tell me what to do. I need to be rescued
or i will freak out. The only thing i want is to have some standard
sounds saved on my synth, that's it. If someone can explain me how to
do it, i will be thankfull.

Thanks

Paul.

Make sure you have your K5 set to receive System Exclusive messages. When
you turn on your K5, it defaults to Not receiving sysex data. You have to
manually set it every time you turn on your K5 and want to receive data via
sysex.

This may not be related to your problem, but whenever I have trouble sending
patch data to my K5, it's usually because I forgot to set the K5 to receive
sysex messages. Hope this helps.

Hi Leslie: Thanks for your reply. Can you tell my how can i configure
my synth to recieve System Exclusive messages please? Is it when you
enter to the midi section and turn on the trs and the rcv from the
<exclusive> part? Please answer me. Thanks. Paul

Here is something you might try. Go to the Files section here in the
group and go to the Patch Library. Look for a folder with my name on
it, Leslie Sanford. Go through the MIDI files in the folders and
pick an instrument out that you might like to use. Download the file.

With your favorite sequencer, play the MIDI file you've downloaded.
Make sure everything is connected and set up properly with the K5.
The patch contained in the MIDI file should be transmitted to your
K5. After playing the MIDI file, check out the K5 and see if there
is a new patch at A1.

Make sure before doing this that you have backed up or copied the
patch at that location because it will be overwritten if everything
goes ok.

Let me know how this goes.

Hi there, I had the same problem as you. I talked to the techinical person at Kawai USA and he sent me the file to load patch banks using the Cakewalk software. Please see the files/patch library section on the K5synth Yahoo page, I saved the patches there. ; You connect your K5 to cakewalk and then load the file as a cakewalk song, and play the song. When you play the song, the cakewalk program will send the data to your K5. The K5 is an older unit and needs to talk to your computer slowly using a "handshake" protocol, so do not chnage the tempo of the song.
Make sure you have these settings:
Receive channel = 1
Receive exclusive = ON
Memory protect = OFF
Good luck

One very common thing when a K5 cannot receive is to make sure that the send and receive channel is set to 1, as many programs default to that setting.
The other thing I have to tell you Pablo, is that the K5 is not the right instrument for the bread-and-butter sounds that you are looking for - except perhaps Hammond organ sounds. This is a synthesizer for experimental music making and exploration of sound relationships. For a band I would get some kind of ROMPLER, like a Korg m1, x3, x5, something with real samples of organ, strings, piano, etc. The k5 can be made to do a decent job, but it's a lot of work.

I agree with Joel,
The K5 is a great synth, but it is ;not the synth for Piano, stings and organ. I love it becuae it does NOT sound like those instruments. I have samplers for that....
I have owned a K5000 for 2 weeks now and have decided to keep the K5 for the experimentation and programing purposes. I saw a K5m sell on ebay (with card) for over $200. Nice to see it still has that kind of value.

Analysed piano sounds from C2 to C7(only Cs, made a multi with them),
sounded better than pianos coming with it but would need to have more
sounds(sound changes are too heavy) . It has good organ sounds, not like
Nathan said(but sound a bit synthetic), also has good bells, chimes,
bass guitars. . . It's better than factory sounds demonstrates it. To
make it smoother(And make sounds more realistic), I suggest you to use a
reverb.
