Help needed getting Kawai K5 sounds onto synth

Help needed getting Kawai K5 sounds onto synth

2019-04-22 by Iain Tann

I have just got back my K5 which I lent to a Musician 18 years ago

I believe it served well but it now has no sounds other than K5SINGLE on it.

I have spent two days stripping and cleaning the keyboard then trying to get the factory sounds back onto the synth using first a Windows 10 laptop then I have dug out an old Windows XP laptop.

I have first tried using Midi-OX then Kfuenf all with no success.

I would really like some help / advice so that I can let me son who is a talented musician show me how to get the best out of it. I will also need to get some spares to replace a few dead buttons if anyone know where they can be sourced from.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Iain.

Unfortunately, I don't have a good solution at all, since I had trouble myself trying to transfer sound banks to my K5m, but here's what I learned using Kfuenf.

-MIDI transfers can be tricky, since the MIDI technology is over 30 years old! Modern computers are actually too fast for the MIDI system to keep up with. There should be a buffer control/delay setting on Kfuenf's settings that you can increase to help the K5 deal with the data being thrown at it. This seemed to help a little, but was not a complete fix for me.

-In Kfuenf, I could not get bank sets to load at all. It would fail every time! I had to resort to loading individual single and multi presets, one-at-a-time.

-It usually took several tries to get the transfer to work for each preset.

-As an older technology test, I also tried transferring K5 presets back and forth to my Ensoniq ASR-10's floppy disk drive, which can specifically save MIDI System Exclusive data files. But this gave me the same kinds of results, where it took several tries to get the data to transfer

I hope someone out there has a better solution for you. I gradually was able to audition all 10 banks of single and multi Kawai presets, but it was a tedious process. When it was all over, I picked my favorite 48 single presets and loaded them into the K5 for good.

Thank you.

I will try that. What delay settings did you use?? I found that if I set them to 500ms nothing works, it just sits there and the default settings fail.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I will post any settings that I find work.

Iain.

would a floppy drive emulator help? It is a device which fits in place of the old floppy drive and allows the use of a usb drive. soyou can load files from a computer to the usb drive and then plug the usb into the floppy emulator. It has the added bonus of holdinga large number of floppy images on one usb drive.

It’s been a couple of years and I don’t remember what delay setting I used.

Edisyn (https://github.com/eclab/edisyn) has a K5 patch editor I wrote a while ago. Looking at the code, here are the pauses it required:

	- 400ms after a single patch is transmitted
	- 10ms after a change patch command
	- 30ms after a single parameter is changed

Thanks,

I will take a look at this. I just need something to get some sounds on the K5. I am sure I used to use a DOS command line program to do this in the past but that was probably a quarter of a century ago now.

Appreciate all the help I am getting.

Iain.

A floppy drive emulator may work but at the moment I don’t even know if there is a hard fault on the K5 so I am reluctant to invest in another device that may not work.

If the device is cheap enough it would probably be worth the investment since my son could use it for other purposes too. I used to have one to record songs and play them back.
