Hi Everyone

Well I'm glad to have found this group, I've just recently purchased
another K5m to replace the one I sold a few years ago. I hope I can
be of some help here too. If you'd like to check out my website here
is the URL www.thesynergystudios.com I just wrote an article on the
K5m and am working on another one about replaceing the opamps and
compnets on the output stage for better s/n ratios. I'm also going to
be adding K5 support to my download area so if you have any patches
you'd like to send me to put in the D/L section let me know.

Regards

Wow! You found a brand new unit!

There are some patches in the files section, but I don't know if it's a
better idea to just put a link here.

I don't know if replacing the opamps will help much, because normally,
the TL0 opamp series are used in almost everything and are very quiet.
An opamp with better power supply rejection could help. I have some SMD
OPA2134 waiting for a small PCB to try them. As for the other
components, there are not much in the signal.

I frankly don't know where all the noise is coming from but I suspect
the demultiplexing ICs (The synth uses two mono DACs and has 4 channels
-> The DAC outputs are switched between a channel and an other
constantly. There might be switching noise. I'd like to try to monitor
the switch ICs outputs one day to see if there's noise (It means we
couldn't do anything about it.) But I doubt that they are the problem
because there would have been no noise at all when the volume would be @
it's minimum position.

Thanks for the reply,
Do you have a schematic of the output section? Metal film resistors
will help with some noise and tantilum caps with a little too.

I had to replace the display light yesterday, I found a guy on ebay
selling el foil in a kit with a new iverter for 12.00. The panel was
just big enough to make both ends of the display but it looks great
now. I may replace the green with blue of white at some point. I
just used the stock inverter circuit, but while I had the unit apart I
resoldered all the power supply connections.

I'm really interested in some of the programs here like the waveform
converter. I think the K5's sound were cool but still untapped. The
file K3newage I downloaded here really shows off some of good stuff
that the unit can do.

Thanks again

Sorry for the very late reply, looks like this mail didn't make it to
my e-mail account.

About the schematic, well, some people here scanned some parts for me.

About changing to metal film, it looks like it isn't the only thing to
do here as the synth has as much background noise as an average tape
deck. It looks like the VCAs (The integrated circuits to control
volume) are pretty noisy. I was thinking to replace these by high-end
units, but these need a microcontroller, which I didn't have the time
to learn programming this summer.
