OK, that sounds hopeful, but does the battery take the display out
with it when it goes? Without a display how can you tell it to program
from the cassete input? And where is the sweep coming from at
start-up, is this what it does when the battery dies as well? It
resets every time I turn it off.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
