It's strage that you brought this up, as I was looking at the Poly800 just the other day and thinking about the exact same thing, same meatodolog and all....trippy. This is exactly how the Kawai k3m is laid out and the Esq-1 is similiar too. I imagine you'd go about it exactly how you put it across, using momentary push buttons hacked ito the button key scanning circuitry. It would be some work, a couple of day's, but afterwards it really would be a great interface for programming sounds, I know i love the interface on the k3m (minus the desire for a rotary encoder). I'd look into findind some easy to interface tactile switches for the operation, ones which you can easily just drill a single cylinder hole for, I've looked under the hood of the Poly800, there's is plenty of space for mounting switches under the entire patch sheet, so that's good to know. How about this for a slim idea. Adding two analogue trigger inputs for the up/down value key. Select the parrameter you wish to control, then use an external drum machine (with trigger outputs) to trigger the up/down value key, sought of a step modulation input. That might sound a little kooky, heres another idea that would work. Modify the footpedal input at the back (which advances the patch #) to accept a trigger input.
